The U.S. Flag Code is a set of federal guidelines established under 4 U.S.C. Chapter 1 that outlines the proper display, handling, and etiquette for the American flag. First compiled in 1923 and adopted by Congress in 1942, it treats the flag as a living symbol. While it is official federal law, it is entirely advisory and does not impose criminal penalties for violations due to First Amendment free speech. Section 8 covers Proper disposal and states:

Proper disposal: When a flag is too worn or torn to represent the nation, destroy it in a dignified way, preferably by burning.

An American Legion flag retirement ceremony—officially called the "Ceremony for Disposal of Unserviceable Flags"—is a highly dignified, solemn ritual used to destroy worn-out U.S. flags by burning. Mandated by The American Legion Resolution 440 passed in 1937, this public ceremony is traditionally held annually on or around June 14 (Flag Day).

Flag Retirement Ceremony will be fine at 2pm. Please bring your lawn chairs and sit in the grassy area west of the swimming pool to watch SSGT Kenneth Stenka lead the ceremony.

Flag Retirement Ceremony will be held today at 2pm on the north side of Legion Post #86. Please bring your lawn chairs and sit on the West side of the swimming pool and watch the retirement ceremony. Today is also Flag Day!

Due to the wind, the Flag Retirement Ceremony is postponed until Sunday, June 14th at 2pm.

The new flag drop box is in front of American Legion Post 86- Atkinson, Nebraska! Drop off your worn or tattered American Flags and they will be respectfully retired on June 13th during the Flag Retirement Ceremony. THANK YOU to Tri County Bank for their generous donation for this project!
