It’s Dungeness crab season 🦀—a time when many people gather with family and friends to enjoy a holiday favorite. But for the fishermen who make it possible, the holidays are often spent at sea.

Pictured here is Josh Suiter, a member of Captain Arik Roberts’ crew aboard the Miss Sarah, proudly supporting Soon Yi Sushi while working the deck. While the Miss Sarah fishes whiting for Da Yang Seafoods in the summer, their winters are spent crabbing in Brookings, OR.

These fishermen brave rough seas, long days, and time away from their families—often during the holidays—so we can serve the very best. We’re deeply grateful to Josh, Captain Arik, his crew, and all fishermen whose hard work makes meals like yours possible.

Did you know Soon Yi is directly connected to Da Yang Seafood Inc., a longtime part of Astoria’s fishing heritage?

Da Yang helps carry forward this town’s fishing legacy, operating an MSC & BRC-certified processing plant right on Astoria’s waterfront under the Great Ocean label. They handle hake, sardines, anchovies, crab, shrimp, groundfish, and premium albacore tuna.

Some of the tuna we serve comes through our broader parent company, Lung Soon, and much of our fish — including tuna and other species — also comes directly from local fisheries here on the Oregon coast.

Soon Yi Sushi – Honoring Veterans on Veteran’s Day 🇺🇸

In lieu of our regular Must-Try Monday post, today we pause to honor the brave men and women who have served our country. On this Veteran's Day, we're reflecting on the history and sacrifices that have shaped our nation, and we want to highlight a special piece of Astoria’s heritage located right across the street from us: The Doughboy Monument.

This statue commemorates the courageous service members of World War I. Created by sculptor John Paulding, it stands as a tribute to the American soldiers of the Great War, embodying courage, sacrifice, and patriotism. Funded by the hardworking citizens of Uniontown, particularly the fishing and canning communities that were the backbone of Astoria, their generosity helped bring this monument to life as a lasting tribute to those who served. The monument’s Spanish Revival-style base, designed by local architect Charles Diamond, reflects the pride and unity of the community. With deep roots in Astoria’s past, The Doughboy stands as a reminder of the bravery, unity, and sacrifice that shaped our town. 🌉
