Yes, Workers Tavern got a 100 on their Health Inspection Report because we always get high scores. But I’d like to talk to you about the recent Astorian article that called out specific restaurants and bars here in town with lower scores that were published the same week an Astoria homeless shelter published photos of their brand new $300k commercial kitchen. NO BUSINESS IN ASTORIA CAN AFFORD A $300k KITCHEN. Nobody. No brewery, no bar, no restaurant. Most businesses who have lower health scores are suffering from genuine aged appliances, smaller than needed refrigeration and product placement. Our hood alone at Workers Tavern cost $80,000 to replace and was asked for by the City of Astoria to circumnavigate thru the roof or else. The mild threat was not appreciated. Businesses pay taxes, a lot of taxes and yet recently, the County Health Inspectors went hard on businesses here in town. Small owner run businesses doing the best they can in a seasonal town with fluctuating prices and new tariffs. We here at Workers would like our customers and the workers of Astoria to know that we see them, we understand the issues but that this seems unbalanced. To publish the demise of a business that buys fish directly off boats or bakes bread or serves cocktails because they received a 75 or 85 health score and yet celebrate a homeless shelter built for a million dollar restaurant is not celebrating what we are here in this town. We are a hardworking town of hardworking people. And the powers that be need to remember without tax dollars and license fees, there is no town. There is no culture or even a shelter. Our small businesses are not the enemy, we are the backbone.
