Mean Pies Pizza

Mean Pies Pizza Circle and Square pizzas made with local and freshly milled whole grains, and seasonal ingredients. We love OWL, we love Pleb, and all that they both do.

Mean Pies Pizza started as a pop up shop in the summer of 2020 in Philadelphia, as a way for PJ Bond to chase his Pizza Dreams. PJ had previously chased a music life around the country, spending days off eating at every pizzeria he could find, and spending summers resting in Asheville with his family. The music eventually slowed down, PJ ended up in Philly, and started to learn from all of the gre

at local shops, including working at the multi-award winning Pizzeria Beddia and with local darlings Circles and Squares. Mean Pies made the move down south in the spring of 2021 so PJ could be closer to family, in the beautiful mountains, and we are incredibly excited and appreciative to add our food to an already vibrant and inspiring scene. After many fun and successful pop-ups at OWL Bakery, Mean Pies has found a new home on the food trailer at Pleb Urban Winery, and it feels like a fantastic fit. Our pizza starts with freshly milled grains and bread flour, is proofed and baked in 12"x12" pans, and yields a crunchy, fluffy, airy crust. Think focaccia that chose a different path. We really enjoy it and think you will too. We will always offer our Plain pizza, which has tomato sauce and mozzarella, as well as some type of seasonal pie. For those who don't eat dairy, we have our Tomato Pie, which is based on something you'll find in Italian bakeries in and around Philadelphia. It's usually served room temperature there, but we treat it like regular pizza here. Sometimes I think that no cheese and extra sauce isn't so appealing, and then I eat a whole pie in a sitting, and more often than not I push the Cheese slices away and reach for a Tomato. I'm always happily surprised how much I love it. The seasonal pies sauces are typical vegan too, just omit the cheeses. Pleb makes wine from grapes grown in this region, which provides a fantastic opportunity to try local grapes that are often new to most folks. These wines are exciting, delicious, and interesting. They also pair really well with the pizza! We accept Cash, Credit Cards, and Venmo. I think that covers it all, but if you have any questions at all, please feel free to email us at [email protected]. Thank you and we can't wait to serve you! Mean Pies Pizza

Heya Pizza Pals,
Well our longer than expected residency at has come to an end, and we could not be more grateful or appreciative to them or to all of you. We want to send deep and sincere thanks to them and the Asheville community for the amazing support and kindness.

The time has come for us to pack up our pizza pans and make room for the beautiful cake program at OWL, as well as figure out what makes the most sense for us. The whole MP team has been going through lots of changes, and needing to move out of OWL is just one small part of that.

We are considering many different possibilities, and would love to keep you informed as we learn more. So, please keep your eyes here for updates, or send us an email at [email protected] to join our mailing list. We will try to send occasional informative updates when it makes sense.

In the interim, please know it has been such a pleasure serving y'all, and your kindness and support has meant the world to us. I realize our business trajectory hasn't been the most traditional, but then neither are we as people or pizza makers. If you've enjoyed being part of our weird journey, we love having you on it. If it's not for you, we also totally get that. Everyone should eat the pizza that they like. We hope to serve ours to you again someday soon.

Love & Pizza,
Mean Pies

*Late February Special* - It's NOT a Reuben Sandwich

This is a fun(ny) one folks.

Before the hurricane we'd been working on a special, and it involved cooking onions down in butter. Zach said it smelled so good we should just put that on a pizza. We tried a bite just for fun, and immediately my brain brought me back to jersey diners, reubens and patty melts. So, with a little tweaking and experimentation, we dialed in some flavors that we think take you on a bit of an adventure. It's definitely not a Reuben Sandwich. It might not even be a pizza, at least according to some people. But we think it's really good, and eats lighter than you'd ever expect, so you can keep going back for more.

This also happened to be the last special we ran right before the hurricane, and just before we had to take a break and reevaluate what was next and best for Mean Pies. It seemed fitting to revisit this special during this time. Plus, it's a staff favorite, and there's not a ton of vegetables coming out of the ground right now.

We will be at OWL North for the rest of February, and we would love to feed you.

Weds - Friday 5-7:30 pm. Feel free to message us ahead of time for pre-orders, or call us during service hours. (828) 372-2445

We are really proud of everyone who is showing up in whatever ways they can to voice dissent, disgust, solidarity, and acceptance. Standing up and showing up can look a lot of different ways for and to different people. There's not always one right answer, and sometimes one right action conflicts with another right action. For tonight, as a team, we have collectively decided to be open to provide a space, provide hours for staff, honor preorders, and support - it wasn't an easy decision, but the one we felt made sense for us for right now.

Take care of yourselves and one another, and let's keep fighting for goodness.

Mean Pies is looking at our next steps, and we are unsure of the best course of action. Maybe you can help?

After Hurricane Helene, we were completely unsure if we had any possible way of being a business, if we could keep making pizza, or had any place to exist. The amazing folks at OWL reached out and gave us a home, offering us a space and good will, and we are forever grateful to them, for this and many other things. They have been so kind, so supportive, so welcoming, and we could never repay their generosity - but deeply appreciate it.

Now that they have been able to open the cake shop, and it is beautifully humming along, it is time for Mean Pies to find a new home. The cohabitation has been amazing, but it will be better for everyone when we can give them back their space, and spread out ourselves on our own.

After much soul (and financial) searching, we've decided we don't have the budget, bandwidth, or desire to do a full build-out. It just doesn't make sense to us with our goals right now. So, we are looking for an existing kitchen space, partnership, turnkey, takeover, mobile setup, something like that. If you know of anything that might fit this kind of situation, we would really appreciate hearing from you. I know this town can be financially prohibitive to opening small businesses, but we are hopeful there is some off kilter relationship we could foster, some small niche we could fill.

Thank you all for your support through our many hard and odd changes. We've never been interested in making buckets of money - we just want to feed people and hopefully ourselves in the process. None of this has been easy, but it sure has been fun. We hope we can figure something good out together.

Big Love,

Mean Pies Pizza

Dearest Pizza Pals - it's been yet another interesting year. Thankfully, there is a lot of beauty and strong community here in Asheville, and we are so grateful for all of you that join us when it feels good.

We will be open on NYE, and would love to feed you and your friends/family. We will be open our regular hours this week, Weds-Fri 5-7:30 pm at OWL North.

To ring things in with more joy and fun, we are bringing back a favorite old special for just this week. Beans & Greens is an homage to a few different traditions and cultures, hopefully paying respect and making people feel good.

This pie takes inspiration from the tradition of serving black eyed peas and collard greens on New Year's Day, as well as calls back to our love of NY white pie slices with broccoli or spinach. There's a hat tip to white bean and escarole soup here as well.

Beans & Greens has mozzarella, black eyed pea and white bean puree, simmered and crispy greens, pickled red onions, parm, and calabrian chili oil.

We hope you'll ring in the new year with us!

We love the Mushroom Cream special. It's like a warm soup meets a pizza, and really works on a dreary December day.

We have the full menu for Thursday 12/18 and Friday 12/19, and then we will take a little Christmas break and make sure has all the space they need to properly serve all of you lovely folks for the holidays. If you haven't checked out the new Cake Shop & Pantry, please do yourself a favor and get over there! Located in the same building, just one door over, on Charlotte Street. Fantastic cakes, pastries, local wares, wine, and pantry items.

*November Special*
Roasted Squash Special is warm and comforting. Savory squash sauce and Mozzarella, finished with a crunchy, sweet/tart, bright Apple-Pumpkin Seed-Herb garnish, and Paprika Oil.

This feels downright autumnal, and we are excited to share it with you for one more week.

It's also really nice as an addition inside the calzone if you'd like a little variety!

*Pizza Service Announcement* - We are currently only serving Square Pies, due to limitations with our permit. However, we don't think this is a loss, but a better opportunity for us to share our original pizza with all of our new friends. We look forward to feeding y'all, and hope you'll check out this fluffy, crunchy beauty.

Stay tuned for any updates, but looks like we will be on a little pizza break until we figure things out.
