As many of you know, we were closed all last week for family vacations, and that’s not something I will apologize for- our kids and grandkids are getting older. My own kids are teenagers now, and I will not apologize for closing my business to spend a full week with them. Is it something we’ve always done? No, but we all needed a break.
Unfortunately, there was a social media post that really upset some of my staff. The post referred to us closing for a week and “to stay closed”. Now, let me be clear- I know we aren’t for everyone, and that’s ok. I don’t like matcha but I don’t make a Facebook tirade. But, history speaks for itself (and so does the line outside the door waiting for us to open, the 30min wait on most Fridays… ). When I’m told to “stay closed”- that’s not a hit at me. That’s at my 35 employees that wouldn’t have a job. 35! Single moms. Entire families. The older generation that just needs something to do. Oil field wives that don’t want to be home alone. High schoolers with their first job. Individuals that have worked for us for years. I guarantee everyone knows someone that has worked here in the 60 years we’ve been open.
When I was shown the post I’m referring to, I laughed, rolled my eyes and went on about my day. My staff, however, didn’t. And that’s why I’m addressing it. I won’t say anything about the person that wrote it, because I know them. BUT I will say this: there’s 2 things you never come after: my children, and my staff.
I am not the typical boss. My employees come first. I have been blessed with this business, but I am *nothing* without the people that help me make this restaurant what it is. We work HARD. (But to the person I’m referring to- you know who you are- please don’t ask me for donations to your organization next year. Obviously we’re better off staying closed.)
With much love and gratitude,
Betsy
