We are having fried chicken, fried fish fillet, meatloaf followed by beef tips with rice, fried shrimp, fried clam strips, french fries, hush puppies, mashed potatoes, baked apples, corn, macaroni and cheese, green beans, pinto beans, turnip greens, rolls, cornbread, and assortment of desserts, and a fresh salad bar. For several years, Thursday evenings at Mildred’s have had a little extra something special thanks to Mr. Mike — one guy, one guitar, and a whole lot of good music. 🎸❤️

Unfortunately, we recently received notice that continuing to have live music in the restaurant would require us to pay an additional music licensing fee. After looking at the cost involved, we’ve made the difficult decision not to continue Thursday night live music at this time.

Restaurants that offer live music can be required to pay music licensing fees when copyrighted songs are performed — even if it’s just one guy with one guitar.

Paying the musician does not include permission to publicly perform copyrighted songs. Organizations like ASCAP, BMI, SESAC, and GMR represent songwriters and publishers and charge businesses licensing fees for music from their catalogs.

For a small restaurant offering live music only a few hours a week, those fees can simply be too expensive to justify. It’s not about refusing to support the musician. It’s a business deciding that an additional recurring licensing expense doesn’t make financial sense.

One guy. One guitar. Still subject to music licensing rules.

We are incredibly thankful to Mr. Mike for all the Thursday nights, all the songs, and all the memories he has shared with us and our customers. 🎶

Sometimes being a small business means making decisions you really don’t want to make, and this is definitely one of them.
