The American Meteor Society said the loud booms heard shortly after 2 p.m. on Saturday were caused by a meteor about 3 feet wide entering Earth’s atmosphere near the New Hampshire–Massachusetts border, south of Boston.

Robert Lunsford of the American Meteor Society said the organization received dozens of reports from as far south as Delaware and as far north as Montreal, with witnesses reporting a double boom, feeling the ground move, or spotting a daytime fireball that looked like a shooting star across the sky.

And Rhode Islanders? We didn’t panic. When the buildings started shaking, we went straight into structural assessment mode and started evaluating load-bearing systems like pros.

Thanks to years of RIDOT turning the Washington Bridge into a full-time case study in “what not to do,” it has basically turned the entire state into honorary structural engineers at this point.
