PANICK. Oh yes! Filipinos in the US are “panicking”, not because of the recent Presidential election. NO!
We Filipinos in the US are panicking (or more accurately “panick-buying”) because the (Filipino/Asian) stores, groceries, supermarkets even at (an online Asian market) are running out of Jufran Banana Ketchup, “Sarsa ni Mang Tomas” and “Barrio Fiesta Bagoong” (or for that matter all other brands of these products). These three are staple in a Filipino household pantry. They are used either as a sauce or an ingredient.
We are panicking because for some reason these last couple of weeks supplies have been dwindling down and yesterday my “hubby-for-a-chef” made me do a store run looking for these three. And mind you, (I forgot to take pictures) but the display racks are empty from where one would usually find these products. Nothing at Seafood City (Concord), Ranch 99 (Concord), Island Pacific (Pittsburg), County Market (Antioch), no more (cause I ransacked the two bottles left of Jufran) at Mabuhay (Brentwood) and my husband just called to say he ransacked the Filipino store in Pittsburg for the ketchup however many they have left.
What is the story behind the shortage? Well the FDA is requiring them to improve something to be approved to be exported here from the Philippines. The owner of Mabuhay said and re-assured me this morning that Jufran and Mang Tomas both got their approval, it will just be a matter of distributing them from wherever the shipment got stalled. As for us “bagoong” (shrjmp paste) lovers, we will have to slow down with what we have now as we may not see another until the Philippine manufacturer can comply with FDA rules.
Sorry that was a long panicky news but that is the latest on the scoop! 📢📢📢
