The Annapolis City Dock is an excellent place to enjoy dinner and dessert. It's not a secret that Dock Street Bar and Grill is known for amazing crab cakes. Our suggestion? Stop in for a drink, stay for a meal, and remember Storm Bros is only two doors down. 136 and 130 make a great pairing.

🦀🍦A local staple since 1976, Storm Bros Ice Cream Factory has been serving up smiles on Annapolis City Dock for nearly 50 years. Founded by brothers Thomas and Sveinn Storm, this family-owned shop started on a handshake deal at 130 Dock Street — and never left. With nearly 50 flavors, homemade waffle cones, and waterfront views right on Ego Alley, it’s one of those spots that defines what Annapolis living is all about. No frills, all flavor. 🦀🍦

If you own an ice cream store you look forward to Spring’s arrival. The warmer weather and increasing daylight hours brings everyone out to enjoy the outdoors. Despite the work going on next to Ego Alley, the City Dock is still a great place to enjoy the shops, restaurants, activities and scenery Annapolis has to offer.
We have another reason to enjoy spring. It’s calving season. Today we had our first arrival of the year, a beautiful dun calf born to Keri. She is a first-time momma and is extremely attentive to her new offspring.
We’re not sure how many ice cream store owners raise cattle, but Sveinn Storm does. We have a small farm near the town of Centreville on the Eastern Shore (Shore Nuff Farm) where we raise Dexter cattle, a breed originating from Ireland. We currently have two breeding bulls and sixteen cows. In the next month and a half, we anticipate the arrival of fifteen more calves. Should you wish to share our spring excitement, let us know. Our animals are very docile and it’s a nice place to visit. Sveinn’s nine grandchildren enjoy farm life, especially driving the tractor and four-wheeler.
We name all our animals with Irish/Gaelic names so feel free to give us suggestions for our new calves. If we use your suggestion, you will get a $20.00 Storm Bros gift card.

People have asked me repeatedly why the press has not covered the city intentionally allowing the flooding on the City Dock. I have taken this to the Capital Gazette many times, complete with photos. In the past three years I have gone to city council meetings probably twenty times. I submitted those same photos and irrefutable evidence to them as well. I went before them again this past Monday. Fast forward to 30:41 of the meeting to see my testimony.

When I first addressed the issue of the failure of our once successful pump system before the city council, the public works director, Burr Vogel, stated that that the pumps were working fine and that they were inspected every morning. I asked him precisely who was doing this task and who he reported his inspections to. He didn’t answer. I responded that his assertion was a flat out lie as I not only have a perfect view of Ego Alley from my apartment, I also have a camera on my Storm Bros. sign that points to the harbor and records the video. I invited the city council to come down and watch the stored video. None of them ever did. Eventually, his remarks were referred to as a “misstatement”.
Vogel’s next excuse was that the pump system could only handle rainwater and was incapable of addressing high tides. I pointed out to the city council that their public works director knew his statement was blatantly false. The pump system’s efficacy resulted in Dock Street being barricaded only once over the first three years. The only time the pump system is unable to handle high tides is when they are high enough to breach the existing sea wall level. Then of course the system simply recirculates the flood water.
Vogel next explained that it was a complicated system and the malfunctions resulted from his inability to obtain the equipment and parts to do the repairs. Other than PVC pipe, the three different pieces of equipment needed to make our current flood remediation system function are the following: Zoeller ½ hp pumps which can be purchased at a cost of $450. The Cherne Industries Inflatable Pipe Plug with 3" Diameter Bypass can be bought for $750. I spoke directly with these manufacturers and discovered that they have never stopped production, nor has there ever been a scarcity of these products. The final piece is a simple backflow preventer running for about $35 which can be picked up at any local plumbing supply store. I provided this information before the city council as well.
It was finally admitted that Burr Vogel’s assertions were “misstatements” and that he “misspoke”. I replied that I was never clever enough to use those phrases with my mom but that I was pretty sure she still would have grabbed for the bar of soap.
I testified repeatedly before the Mayor and the city council I was willing to purchase these items for the city to prevent Dock Street businesses from flooding and was also willing to pay for the installation. The total cost to purchase everything is barely over $5,000. My repeated offers were ignored.
I was once confronted by a city official about turning the breaker back on to the pump system as someone had seen me do it. I replied, “How did you know it was off”?
Over the past three years Storm Bros. and other Dock Street businesses had to close well over 120 times due to flooding, either part of the day or all day. This caused enormous financial hardship to us and our employees who had to be sent home early or have their shifts cancelled altogether.
In summation, for three years I repeatedly went before the city council to plead for them to protect us by getting their once very successful flood remediation up and running. I personally showed both the mayor, Gavin Buckley, and Harry Huntley, our ward one alderman, the non-functioning pumps and explained how easy it would be to correct the situation. My pleas fell on deaf ears. The hypocrisy of both Buckley and Huntley to repeatedly claim that their main concern with this new project is flood remediation and that they are the answer to the problem is astounding. The last time I went before the city council on this issue I asked them to please explain why they had done nothing. They refused to respond to which I replied, "Your silence is deafening."

It is difficult to comprehend the lack of empathy the City government has for the City Dock businesses. In 2018 the parking area at City Dock had to be barricaded 70 times. In 2019 a flood remediation pump system (that had been promised for over a decade) was finally installed. For the next three years the system worked perfectly resulting in only one instance of street flooding. Then, despite our many pleas before the city council and the mayor, the pumps were kept shut off resulting in 120 instances of street flooding over the next three years. Now we keep being flooded from the city’s contractor putting sediment control liners in the storm drains. Both Whiting Turner and the city are aware that these liners plug up quickly and need to be attended to frequently. In actuality, there no reason to use these offsite as the contractor is responsible for implementing proper sediment control onsite. The city promised us we would no longer have to worry about being flooded once the work started. Another of the many promises made to Dock Street Merchants that has been broken.

Please feel free to share this post. We need citizens to know what is going on!
