We are excited to announce that Zingerman's Candy Manufactory now sources all their chocolate from Ecuador’s Conexión Chocolate! Founded by Jenny Samaniego, Conexión Chocolate is a woman-owned business that works directly with cooperatives of cacao farmers in Ecuador and produces its chocolate within the country. This method not only preserves the cacao’s single-origin fine flavor but also supports the local economy. Zingerman’s Candy Manufactory will be using both dark and milk chocolate from Conexión, which operates a U.S. warehouse right here in Michigan, up in Traverse City! We are so excited for this partnership between two wonderful women-owned companies who are leading the way in sustainable chocolate sourcing.

SANDWICH OF THE MONTH! October’s Sandwich of the Month was created in memory of Bob Wechsler by his loving family. Bob loved life, but above all, he loved being with people! An avid reader and traveler, Bob’s absolute happy place was simple: breaking bread with those he adored. In fact, he was usually planning his next meal while still eating his current one! And if it were a deli meal…even better!

Bob possessed a magical ability to make anyone feel seen and valued, whether chatting up a taxi driver, swapping ideas with an entrepreneur, or goofing around with the kids who filled his world. A devoted husband, father, grandfather, and uncle to all, Bob never met a stranger whose story he didn't want to hear.

Bob’s family misses him dearly and thought this Sandwich of the Month opportunity at the ChadTough auction was a perfect way to honor Bob’s love of deli sandwiches AND his belief in making the lives of everyone and especially children better. He would love ChadTough and the experts they work with who are determined to change the future for children with brain cancer. The ChadTough Defeat DIPG Foundation was founded by Jason and Tammi Carr, from Ann Arbor and Mark and Jenny Mosier, from Maryland–parents who lost their sons, 5-year-old Chad and 6-year-old Michael, in 2015 to this horrible disease.

Today is Indigenous People's Day. This day of reflection was first proposed at a United Nations conference in 1977 by Indigenous delegates from all over the globe who were empowered by the Red Power Movement of the late 1960s. It took 12 more years for the first state, South Dakota, to replace Columbus Day with Indigenous People's Day in 1989, where it was celebrated officially the following year as "Native American Day." Several states have followed suit since then, and Michigan is one of them. This day serves to begin the repair work of Indigenous erasure from the country's historical record, where we not only acknowledge the gruesome foundations of this nation, but also honor and celebrate Indigenous cultures that have endured over hundreds of years.

Michigan is home to a total of 12 federally-acknowledged tribes, which include multiple Chippewa, Ottawa, and Potawatomi tribes among others. These tribes are sovereign governments that hold direct jurisdiction over their members and territory, where they provide vital services such as lawmaking, judicial court systems, education, and more.

It's National Coming Out Day! Inaugurated by Robert Eichberg and Jean O'Leary in 1988, NCOD is celebrated on October 11th to honor the anniversary of the Second National March on Washington for Le***an and Gay Rights in 1987. Whether you have come out, are questioning your identity privately, or are not in a position to come out safely, you are brave simply for reckoning with who you are.
