The Natural Ethiopia is finally back! We love this stone-fruit-peachy, juicy sweet coffee.

Tasting Notes: Blueberry, Peach, Fruit Juice Sweetness
Roast: Light
Method: Natural
Farm: Kayon Mountain Farm
Region: Shakisa, East Guji, Oromia

The natural coffee process dries whole coffee cherries in the sun, skin and fruit left on the seed throughout. The result is a deeply fruity coffee bean, and a favorite brew for many.

Barista erika is also a talented illustrator. She runs a figure drawing class the 2nd and 4th Wednesdays of every month at Dzanc House - Literary & Art Programs, Residency & Gallery. You’re invited, beginners and all!

Stop by our Ypsi shop to see her new gallery wall. In the meantime, enjoy this mini doc and Erika’s perspective on figure drawing as both artist and figure.

Jackie Shane
espresso - coconut - keylime - thyme

💙

Born and raised (1940) in Nashville, TN, to later become a major contributor to the “Toronto Sound” in Canada, Jackie Shane is remembered as a pioneer for Transwomen in entertainment. Shane began her music career in Nashville as a young singer being quickly recruited at age 16 into a music trio called Les Mondays where she became known for her crowd pleasing move of standing whilst drumming and singing. Continuing her work as a drummer she was booked to play on records for Blues and R&B artists like: Larry Williams, Big Maybelle, Gatemouth Brown, Little Willie John. Shane then transitioned her work from sessions to full stage performances, most notably her regular slot at the Nashville 400 Club. However, after the witnessing of a horrific beating of a Black man, Jackie Shane left the segregated southern US to Toronto, Canada, where she garnered a local Top 10 charted hit and a national Top 100 single, solidifying her as a historical contributor to the legacy of R&B.

Lou Sullivan
flashed chilled coffee - lemon - ginger - mint

💛

An author and a life long activist, Lou Sullivan lives in the q***r western canon as an instrumental figure for the Trans community. Perhaps most famous for his book We Both Laughed in Pleasure: The Secret Diaries of Lou Sullivan (2019), Lou began his advocacy work for Transmen as he was working as a secretary for the University of Milwaukee (1973) where he joined the Gay People’s Union and became a regular contributor to their newsletter. Growing ever more increasingly difficult to exist as a gay Transman in Milwaukee, Sullivan moved to San Francisco (1975) where he faced many years of denied access to the surgical care he desired. Despite his continued denial to care, Sullivan was a fervent volunteer in Bay Area organizations such as: Janus Information Facility, Golden Gate Girls/Guys, and GLBT Historical Society (founder)
In each of these respective org Sullivan offered his writing to spread “news and information on transvestism and transsexualism” in order to provide global access to q***r and trans people seeking community and assistance medically and emotionally. Although tragically passing due to HIV/AIDS, Lou Sullivan dedicated his work to ensure that Transmen, especially those with varying sexual identities, are given the dignity and validation and access to the care that allows them to live a whole life.

Miss Major

espresso - peach - cinnamon - warming spaces

❤️

Orator, matriarch, revolutionist- all of these words and more, only begin to describe the indelible life-force that is Miss Major Griffin-Gracy, commonly referred to as, “Miss Major”. Beginning in 1960s New York, Miss Major became known for her work as a community mentor for trans and intersex people as well as a participant in political direct actions, most notably, the Stonewall Riots. After a difficult decade of inconsistent housing and a traumatizing wrongful jail sentence, Miss Major found a new home in San Diego where she focused her her work various HIV/AIDS care efforts for several decades to then become executive director of the Trans Gender Variant Intersex Justice Project which sought to provide social services, legal and emotional support to trans & intersex people experiencing imprisonment. Although she is no longer with us Earthside, the ripples of Miss Major’s fervent spirit for Black & Trans liberation will continue to be felt and built upon for generations.
“I don’t need their permission to exist; I exist in spite of them. I want you to train and teach and love on and create families within my community and gender non-conforming people, so that we can understand that we have a culture, we have a history, we have a reason to be here. We have a purpose. We’re entitled to be loved, and seek happiness, and share that with the people that we care about.” -Miss Major Griffin-Gracy
