Ever crack open a fortune cookie and assume it’s an ancient Chinese tradition? The truth is more surprising than the message inside.

Despite being a staple at many Chinese restaurants, fortune cookies actually trace back to Japan and were later popularized in California by Japanese American bakers before becoming associated with Chinese-American cuisine.

Over time, they became a cultural mix-up that stuck, an American tradition inspired by Japanese confectionery, not traditional Chinese food.
