Sometimes, the Most Unexpected Conversations Leave the Biggest Impression.
This morning, a young customer walked into Hot Berries & Crepes. He was a very familiar face, someone who has visited us many times before.
After placing his order, he paused for a moment and politely asked me,
“What kind of music do you play in your dining room?”
I smiled and replied, “Mostly Mozart, classical symphonies, and a little jazz.”
Curious, I asked him why.
He paused for a second and said something that genuinely caught my attention.
“It’s strange… there’s just something about this music that I really like. I can’t quite explain what it is, but something about it draws me in.”
As I began preparing his meal, we continued our conversation, and I explained why we chose this particular type of music for our restaurant.
You see, running a small, family owned business is not always as simple as it looks from the outside.
We often work 16 to 18 hours a day. And like many other small business owners, our days are filled with decisions, responsibilities, challenges, and sometimes overwhelming stress.
While we do our very best to keep everything running smoothly in front of our customers, there’s an entirely different world happening behind the scenes.
The early mornings, the preparation, the planning, the organizing, the unexpected problems, and the countless decisions that must be made. Some challenges happen in the kitchen, some in the back room, and many simply live quietly inside our heads.
All while trying to build something meaningful, provide the best experience for our customers, and create a future for our family.
And somewhere in the middle of all that beautiful chaos, there’s music.
We play Mozart, classical symphonies, and jazz because they bring a certain peace into our busy days.
They help us slow down mentally, even when our hands never stop moving.
They remind us that even during the most stressful moments, there is still beauty, calmness, and something worth appreciating.
And quite simply, we genuinely love this music.
Then the young man asked me another interesting question.
“Do you understand the language?”
I smiled and replied,
“Not entirely. But you know, music is a language of its own.”
I explained that when you listen to the same symphony a few times, you begin to hear things you didn’t notice before.
You start to recognize the emotions behind the melodies, the dramatic moments, the gentle transitions, and the beautiful way the instruments seem to speak to one another.
Just like a song with lyrics, a symphony can tell a story.
Only its story is often more subtle, more personal, and sometimes much deeper than words can express.
You don’t always have to understand every word to understand how something makes you feel.
And perhaps that’s one of the most beautiful things about music.
Two people from completely different generations, backgrounds, and walks of life can hear the same piece of music and feel something meaningful without ever needing to explain why.
This morning reminded me of something important.
We spend so much time thinking about the food we prepare, the quality of our ingredients, and the service we provide. But sometimes, it’s the little things we don’t think much about that make an impression on someone.
A familiar melody. A peaceful atmosphere. A warm conversation. A few quiet moments in the middle of a busy morning.
To that young gentleman, thank you for asking such a thoughtful question.
You may not have realized it, but our little conversation made my morning a little more meaningful.
And to everyone who walks through our doors at Hot Berries & Crepes, we hope you find more than just a delicious meal.
We hope you find a little warmth, a little peace, and perhaps even a melody that stays with you long after you leave.
Because sometimes, the most beautiful things in life aren’t meant to be explained. They’re simply meant to be felt.
