🍽️ “People may forget what was on the menu, but they rarely forget how you made them feel.”

For Dr. Mark A. Kaestner, B.S. ’90, The Tearoom was more than a classroom or a restaurant. It was where he learned lessons about teamwork, leadership, resilience and the importance of serving others.

A century of meals. A century of memories. And generations of students learning lessons that last far beyond the table.

For a century, The Tearoom has been serving up more than delicious food. It’s been preparing students for careers in food service and hospitality while giving guests plenty of reasons to come back for seconds.

From deviled eggs and asparagus with rarebit sauce to cherry pie tarts and glazed ham balls, The Tearoom has been part classroom, part gathering place and, for 100 years, a beloved Iowa State tradition. ❤️💛

100 Years of Memories. ❤️💛

For Joan Bice Underwood, Iowa State was more than the place where she earned a degree. It was where she developed the skills, values and connections that would shape her life and influence generations of her family.

Born in Cedar Rapids, Iowa, Joan arrived at Iowa State in 1948 to study home economics education. Like students in today’s College of Health and Human Sciences, her education combined academic study with practical, hands-on experiences designed to prepare students for their future.

🍽️ A Taste of Tradition Since 1926

For 100 years, the Iowa State Tearoom has been bringing students, faculty, staff and the community together around good food, meaningful experiences and a whole lot of Cyclone tradition.

Now, it’s time to celebrate! 🎉

We’re kicking off our 100th anniversary year with a soft opening on September 9 at The Joan Bice Underwood Tearoom.

For our first week, we’ll be serving one special menu:

🍝 Tearoom Spaghetti
🫛 Italian-Style Green Beans
🥖 Garlic Bread
🎃 Pumpkin Bar

Whether you’ve been visiting the Tearoom for decades or you’re experiencing it for the first time, we invite you to pull up a chair and be part of a tradition that has been serving up memories for a century.
