Thanks Heinz History Center!
Happy Pepperoni Pizza Day! We’re serving up a slice of local history from Frank’s Pizzeria in Ambridge. 🍕
Frank and Costanza Aloe opened Frank’s at 618 Duss Avenue in Ambridge in 1958 after immigrating to the United States from Italy. After working in the steel mills, Frank spotted an ad for pizza-making school in an Italian-language newspaper and headed to New York City. For $600, he learned the trade and came home equipped with a pizza oven, work table, pizza peels, and pans.
When Frank’s Pizzeria opened on Sept. 22, 1958, the Aloes gave away free slices to introduce their neighbors to pizza.
To this day, the shop is run by the Aloe family. Now who’s ordering a pie for dinner?
