Her name will no longer be “Lucille” but instead her name will be “Marie Jean”.
The first recorded Black female pitmaster in American history.

Her History:
Born enslaved in Arkansas in the 1780s, she was a biracial woman who was purchased by Colonel James Scull in 1811 at Arkansas Post.

The Pitmaster:
She was an exceptionally skilled barbecue specialist. Her most famous historical mention comes from 1840, when she confidently directed and superintended a massive public Fourth of July barbecue in Pine Bluff, Arkansas.

Her Freedom:
Because of her undeniable culinary talents and grit, she was able to earn money to purchase her own freedom for $800 when she was around 50 years old.

After securing her freedom, she overcame several legal barriers imposed on Black women at the time to establish and operate her own highly successful hotel and tavern in Arkansas.
