If Santa Elena Canyon is on your West Texas itinerary, make sure you leave time to explore it on foot.

The Santa Elena Canyon Trail takes you right between the towering canyon walls, with the Rio Grande alongside you and some pretty incredible views along the way. It’s one of those places that feels even bigger once you’re standing in the middle of it.

We’re proud to see Alpine Bed and Breakfast included in Texas Time Travel’s collection of historic lodging across the state. Our Victorian home was built in 1887–1888, and today guests can still experience a piece of that history, just with a few more modern comforts.

You can pack a lot into one West Texas day without spending half of it in the car. 🌵🥾💦

Just 23 miles from Alpine, the Chihuahuan Desert Research Institute & Botanical Gardens has more than five miles of trails, 18 acres of botanical gardens and an incredible cactus collection with roughly 2,000 specimens.

Hike down into tree-filled Modesta Canyon, climb to Clayton’s Overlook for sweeping Davis Mountains views, or simply wander through the gardens and cactus greenhouse.

Then? Grab lunch at Stone Village Market in Fort Davis and keep going to Balmorhea State Park for an afternoon swim in the world’s largest spring-fed swimming pool.
