Ludlow Enterprises announced today it is selling the Big Boy Restaurant located on Ripley Boulevard to the chain’s franchisor Big Boy Restaurant Group. Ludlow Enterprises CEO Brian Ludlow said “we are shifting our focus to other ventures and opportunities”. Big Boy International was looking to strengthen its company store presence so the timing and alignment was perfect for the transition.
“We are leaving our staff, customers and community in great hands, with the franchisor as the buyer, which was our primary concern” said Ludlow. Ludlow Enterprises continues to own and operate Mancino’s pizza & grinders along with several commercial and residential real estate ventures.
The Ludlow family has been Big Boy franchisees for over 50 years. In 1972 Miles Ludlow, the company’s founder, opened the Alpena Big Boy on the Thunder Bay River. They expanded to other Northern Michigan cities until selling those locations to the franchisor in 2005.
The Big Boy has made many appearances in Alpena over the years. From the 4th of July parades, the Thunder Bay 250 (for those old enough to remember that), Brown Trout, Special Olympics and the infamous Cruise Night at the Ripley Big Boy and countless other events over the years. Phil Ludlow who oversaw the operations for many years said, “It’s a bittersweet moment, sad that it is leaving our family, but glad to see Big Boy corporate carrying on the legacy.”
Jane Ludlow-Towne tearfully said “the biggest thanks of all goes out to the staff who have continually delivered quality food and service to our guests over the years, they are the real champions in our company” The company has supported hundreds of charitable causes and programs throughout it’s 50 years as Big Boy Franchisees and over 58 years in the community.
