Robata of Tokyo

Robata of Tokyo Robata means fireside. In traditional Japan, the fireside hearth was the heart of the house.

It was the communal space to share not only food, but conversation and closeness of family and friends alike.

Dear our customers/friends
How have you been?
It has been over 5 years since Mr. Shindo passed away in Seattle.
I still have many phone calls and surprise massages from you and talk about those wonderful times we shared. I thought that I better tell you about my recent life.
I moved to California a half year ago and now live with our youngest daughter’s family.
Our 6 years old granddaughter keeps me active and young. I enjoy gardening here since we have beautiful weather through the year.
I miss you!
Enjoy Japanese Foods although Covid made it difficult.
Stay safe and have Best Year!

Hello Friends.

How are you?
It has been over a year since Shindo-San passed away.
He, the Robata, you (our customers and friends) and those we've had the pleasure to know and work with are often in my thoughts. Since relocating to Seattle, I have been quite busy taking care of my youngest granddaughter (Rose, age 2). We have two more grandchildren (Ryden, age 8; Aria, age 5) and I wanted to give them all a memory book of their grandfather.
If you have time, please help me create this memory book by uploading photos of you, family & friends enjoying food and fun times at Robata or any catered event. Or, if you are like myself and have piles of photos that would take AGES to look through, I would also like to include simple memories or anecdotes of Mr. Shindo: the young man with unbound energy; the well-dressed, suave businessman; the joke-loving funny man; the proud restauranteur; the mellowed sushi chef….

I hope you have a very Happy, Healthy and Prosperous New Year.

Ikuko Shindo

To Our Friends,
Thank you very much for your sympathies and condolences.
Your memories, photos and video remind us of good days and comfort us.
We are grateful to you all for putting Mr. Shindo and Robata of Tokyo as a special place in your hearts. We are very fortunate to have you not only as customers but as friends for such a long time.
Mr. Shindo loved to create and enjoy delicious foods. While here he enjoyed sushi from the best restaurant in Seattle and his last meal was Christmas dinner cooked by his youngest daughter. Although his death was sudden and unexpected, he enjoyed his life to the fullest.
He was a happy man with his business life and with his family life.

Thank you,
Ikuko Shindo and Family

Haruyoshi Shindo died peacefully in his sleep in Seattle, WA on December 27, 2016.
Mr. Shindo was born in Tokyo, Japan, joined the Merchant Marine and traveled around the world before settling in the United States. In 1977, he opened his first restaurant in Wilkes-Barre, PA. He later opened the Robata of Tokyo in Scranton, Allentown and the Poconos. Mr. Shindo pioneered Japanese cuisine in Northeastern Pennsylvania and was one of the first to introduce sushi to the region. He embraced life and was most happy creating and enjoying delicious foods. To Mr. Shindo, the Robata was not just a restaurant, it was his home (seriously – he lived upstairs) and his patrons were not just customers, they were good friends and family. He took great pride in those friendships and the fact that the Robata was an integral part of many birthday, anniversary and happy celebrations.
After retiring, Mr. and Mrs. Shindo moved to Seattle. They enjoyed daily visits with his youngest granddaughter Rose with whom Mr. Shindo shared his fondness for sweet treats. He delighted in family reunions with his adored grandchildren.
Haruyoshi Shindo was preceded in death by his beloved canine son, Kishi. He is survived by his loving wife of 44 years, Ikuko; three daughters, Miyuki Graham and husband Patrick, Perry Hall, Maryland; Misa Mariolle and husband Germain, Redmond, Washington; Emi Bravo and husband Rick, Seattle; and grandchildren Ryden, Aria and Rose.
A private memorial service was held with family.
In lieu of flowers, please go out and celebrate life with a good meal. Mangia!

Hello friends & customers,
How are you and your family?
We hope snow storm in east cost is not as bad as weather forecast predicts.
In Seattle we hardly see snow and it is warm. But we see more rain than sun shine.
We finally moved to our own apartment in January. Our apartment is close to our daughter's home. It is very convenient and comfortable for us to live so close to our daughter’s family and be able to go back and forth.
Recently our oldest daughter's family visited Seattle. They came to see our new granddaughter who was born on Oct. 26, 2015. It was nice to see all daughter’s families together.
Two people are missing in the picture. Middle daughter was photographer and her husband was in California.
Let us know when you visit Seattle.
Wising you have a happy and healthy new year.
Mr. and Mrs. Shindo

Dear Friends of the Robata of Tokyo,

It has been 10 months since we closed the Robata due to Mr. Shindo’s health.
Thank you for your well wishes and prayers. He has recovered very well and we are enjoying our retirement.

Our FaceBook page will close shortly and we are in the process of selling our property. Thank you very much for being such great customers and friends. We have enjoyed countless meals and celebrations with you and wish you all the best.

Sincerely,
Mr. and Mrs. Shindo

Dear Friends of the Robata of Tokyo,

After 29 wonderful years of preparing delicious Japanese food, we will be closing the doors to the Robata of Tokyo after dinner service this Saturday, November 15, 2014. It has been an honor and privilege to have been one of the first and most successful Japanese restaurants in the area. We want to thank our customers and friends for allowing us to do what we love for all these years. While the sushi bar is closed with Shindo-San taking early retirement due to health concerns, the Robata of Tokyo is open for delicious kitchen-prepared and hibachi meals. We invite you to dine with us one last time before we close.

Thank you,
Mr. and Mrs. Shindo

Be careful of a fraud!
I almost fell a victim to a fraud on Independence Day. A man called from PPL. He said " PPL has to cut your electric power in 30 minutes because of nonpayment for two months." I said " We always pay with automatic pay." He said "I apologize for a mistake on our side. But you have to pay $1498.90 to PPL in a half hour. Otherwise you will lose power and it will take you two weeks to get power back. We will reimburse you $1498.90 immediately." Words of a half hour and two weeks of no business made me panic and I went to Rite Aid to buy money pac of $1498.90 according to his direction. Sales clark was careful because of the amount. She brought back a manger with her. As soon as I mentioned PPL, she shouted "It's a fraud." One week ago a Syrian woman came and bought almost $3000 money pac to pay PPL. Syrian women could not find where money went.
Of cause electric was on when we got back.
I can't believe this. While I was typing this, another man from PPL called me and said the same thing. It was different voice and different name. Now I wonder how many men are doing this. I reported this incident to police yesterday. You understand how stupid I feel now.
