Our hearts are profoundly broken.
Today, May 18, 2026, a senseless shooting at the Islamic Center of San Diego claimed the lives of three innocent men, including a heroic security guard who selflessly protected others. This attack has shattered families, wounded an entire community, and filled us all with deep sorrow and outrage.
In the wake of this devastating tragedy, we stand together with heavy hearts, yet we refuse to surrender our commitment to mercy, faith, and our shared humanity. Hate has struck with cruel force, claiming precious lives and inflicting unimaginable pain, but it will not prevail. It cannot claim victory over the goodness that still binds us.
This tragedy has brought waves of grief that overwhelm us. We weep for the three men taken too soon devoted worshippers and protectors whose lives were cut short in a place of peace and prayer. We carry their memories with tenderness and ache. Yet even in our mourning, we choose hope over despair, compassion over bitterness, and unity over division. We will honor the fallen by refusing to let darkness define us.
We pay special tribute to the courageous security guard and all the brave heroes whose bravery and selflessness in the face of terror saved countless lives. In humanity’s darkest hours, their light shines as a powerful reminder that courage, sacrifice, and love remain stronger than hatred.
For years, we have dedicated ourselves to building bridges across faiths, cultures, and backgrounds. Today, we reaffirm that sacred work with even greater resolve. Connection, understanding, and mutual respect are not optional they are the most powerful defenses we have against future violence.
To our elected officials, public leaders, and voices of influence: words carry weight far beyond the moment they are spoken. Language that sows fear, division, or dehumanization can become the seed of tragedy. We urge you to wield your words with care and conscience. Leadership demands moral responsibility, and humanity must always rise above political expediency.
Though hate has wounded us deeply today in San Diego, it will not have the final word. Goodness, solidarity, and love will endure and in the end, they will triumph.
We grieve. We remember the victims. We stand with the Islamic Center of San Diego. We rise. 💔
