Hi family and friends,

It's been a long time since I last posted on social media, but in early December, I survived a stroke caused by a blood clot that formed after I got COVID-19 around Thanksgiving. Since then, I have been rehabbing and trying to get back to “normal.” Although my stroke was rather mild, it has affected my vision, left hand (which is my dominant hand), and balance. I'm still trying to relearn how to write and type, but fortunately, physical therapy has been progressing well, and I'm slowly regaining my balance and strength. Every day, I'm seeing improvement, so I'm hopeful that the remaining deficiencies will improve over time.

I have many things to be thankful for, but first and foremost, I am fortunate to have my wife, Mona, by my side throughout this. She has been amazing, and I don't know where I would be without her. My family and friends have also been very instrumental in my rehab, and all of their support, prayers, and visits are greatly appreciated. I have many challenges ahead of me, but one thing is for certain: this situation will not bring me down. It's going to take a lot more than a stroke to stop me.

For those of you who have donated, I can't thank you enough for your support. I have not yet been cleared to return to work by my doctor, so your donations are extremely helpful to us during this difficult time. If you'd like to make a donation, we have a GoFundMe campaign at https://gofund.me/704acb0b

When we're enjoying a drink at a local speakeasy, talking about tomorrow's Breaking Benjamin, Staind, and Daughtry concert, and this pops up on our messenger. Oh, do we love challenges, but what to do about our tix?

Today many food truck owners and operators gathered in the Vincent E. Griego Council Chambers for a City Council meeting to voice our concerns over the recent increase in health inspection fees, which previously was $120 per year, but was increased to $900 as of 8/1/24. Unfortunately, the City Council disallowed discussion of those fees in their agenda, preventing us from speaking on the issue. We are now forced to voice our concerns to and all of the Councilmembers in Albuquerque. I have reached out to District 1 Councilmember Louie Sanchez via email, as well as the 8 other Councilmembers. I will also be reaching out to Mayor Keller.

In summary, the fee increase is excessive. It puts a strain on our food service businesses, and it prevents us from giving our employees a living wage. It also could lead to more illegal operations of food businesses who are not registered and permitted to vend in the City.

The revenue generated from this increase--on 300 registered mobile food businesses--would allow the City to hire no more than 6 new health inspectors at $37,000/year. Alternatively, if the fee were set to $240 per year, and the Gross Receipts Tax rate were increased from 7.625% to 7.7% (still lower than the previous 7.875%), the extra GRT revenue generated by over 38,000 Albuquerque businesses could be $5,000,000, which could allow the City to hire 56-136 new employees, depending on salary, experience, and benefits.

Voices need to be heard on this issue! Please contact your City Councilor and Mayor Keller and convince them to put this matter up for public discussion.
