The only question that remains: where will your investigation begin?

Why does the simple tradition of afternoon tea still matter?

Because it asks us to pause.

In Episode Five of Miss Prim & Proper, we consider the quiet gift of teatime: a reason to set aside hurry, sit down together, and become fully present to the moment before us.

Slowing down is not an indulgence. It is exactly what we all need.

A beautiful summer dessert does not need to be complicated.

This Tea-Infused Crème Anglaise recipe with Summer Fruits is silky, lightly sweet, and infused with our Blueberry Festival black tea for a delicate fruity note. Spoon it beneath fresh berries, peaches, and nectarines for an elegant ending to a summer meal.

Save this recipe for your next gathering or make it on a day that needs a little something extra.

Tea-Infused Crème Anglaise with Summer Fruits
Makes 10 to 12 servings

Ingredients

Âľ cup heavy cream
Âľ cup milk
½ cup sugar
4 tsp. Blueberry Festival loose leaf tea
½ tsp. vanilla extract or ½ vanilla pod, split lengthwise
6 large egg yolks
Fresh blueberries
Fresh blackberries, sliced in half
2 to 3 ripe peaches, sliced
2 to 3 ripe nectarines, sliced

Directions

Combine cream, milk, sugar, tea leaves, and vanilla in a medium saucepan. Heat just until the mixture begins to boil, then remove from heat and steep for 5 minutes.

Strain through a fine-mesh sieve.

Whisk the egg yolks until smooth. Slowly pour the hot cream mixture into the yolks while whisking constantly.

Return the mixture to the saucepan and cook over medium heat, stirring constantly, until it coats the back of a spoon or reaches 180°F.

Strain into a bowl set over an ice-water bath and cool completely, stirring often.

Cover and refrigerate for 2 hours.

To serve, divide the chilled crème anglaise among bowls and top with fresh summer fruit.

For another lovely variation, try our Island Garden Pouchong with mango, pineapple, and papaya.

Best enjoyed slowly, perhaps with a cup of English Breakfast tea beside it.

Did you know The St. James Tearoom has its very own china patterns?

Our Victorian Damask Fine and Emmai's Roses Bone China were created exclusively for The St. James Tearoom and handmade in England by Roy Kirkham. These timeless, classic patterns are quietly elegant enough for a formal tea table, yet warm enough to be enjoyed every day.

From the graceful scrollwork to the St. James name beneath each piece, this is china meant to be used, enjoyed, and treasured. The kind that makes every pour, every sip, and every moment around the table feel just a little more lovely.

You can bring a piece of The St. James Tearoom home with you from our Market or Online Tea Shop.

The last day to order our popular Cheddar Scones is August 30.

Bring them home ready to enjoy, or choose them frozen and bake them whenever you are longing for something warm and savory.

Our team recommends pairing these savory scones with a sweet tea for a beautifully balanced teatime. For a distinctly New Mexican breakfast, serve them warm alongside scrambled eggs and green chile.

However you enjoy them, we suggest bringing some home while they are here.

For some, the St. James Tearoom is more than a place to enjoy afternoon tea. It becomes a treasured pause from the noise of the world.

We are deeply honored to be part of stories like this one and especially delighted to have inspired a lifelong love of tea along the way.

May every visit bring beauty, rest, and perhaps the discovery of a new favorite cup.

What a lovely thing it is to see The St. James Tearoom through the eyes of a guest!

We were honored to be featured recently in TravelMag, where the writer shared everything from our warm Traditional Cream Scones and clotted cream to our private parlors, fine English china, thoughtfully paired teas, and the pleasure of an afternoon that is allowed to unfold slowly.

Two observations in particular made us smile: “It is an unusually slow meal by modern standards. That is exactly why it works.” And, perhaps even more delightfully, “Restraint gains you nothing here.”

We rather agree. Come hungry. Add the clotted cream. Linger over every course. And most importantly, give yourself permission to enjoy an afternoon in which there is nowhere else you need to be.

We are grateful to TravelMag for capturing so beautifully what we hope a teatime at our tearoom can be. We invite you to read the full feature at the link below.

Warm scones, thick clotted cream, rotating themes, and private parlors give this New Mexico tea room an afternoon experience that feels extra special.
