Downtown Johnny’s was a legendary 1980s political watering hole in Albany, New York, located at the corner of Philip and Madison Avenue—the space now occupied by the Hill Street Cafe. Frequented by power brokers, lobbyists, and state officials, it gained fame as an unofficial extension of the Capitol building during Governor Hugh Carey’s and Mario Cuomo's administrations.

As political culture shifted in the mid-1980s and officials adopted more modern, less "clubby" routines, famous political saloons like Downtown Johnny’s closed their doors, marking the end of an era for Albany’s backroom political culture.

"Our first time in NY. The food, service & atmosphere were wonderful. Our server was Kendra she was knowledgeable of the menu & very friendly. We had the pizza, Philly cheesesteak & corned beef Reuben sandwich. All was vey good and reasonable priced.
Many thanks to Kendra for making these Texans feel welcome! We would definitely recommend going to eat & having a drink here."
