Last week I was lucky to work (in Mom's Garden), with CSU Extension Master Gardeners Dana Brown and Sue Plane. I did a little teaching while we got some digging and planting done. And with Dana's kids, who weren't afraid to get their hands dirty-- so great to see!
I was able to dig them some Russian, May Night Salvia, Gaillardia and varying colors of yarrow. If you want the same kind of 'deal', give me a call 719-580-7838.

Spraying goatheads(also known as puncture vine) is NOT the way to get rid of them!! EVER! You kill the plant, BUT every flower that was there still puts on a seed pod. Each seed pod can than produce 4-6 seeds. A single mature plant can produce 200-500 seeds-- yikes!
They then use a time-release system where some seeds will germinate with the first rainfall, and other seeds can remain dormant for 5-7 years.
Goatheads need to be pulled and put in a plastic bag to be disposed of. Do not compost them-- that will not kill the seeds!
If you decide to try and burn them, a very high level of heat needs to be used. A light scorching can cause pod to open up and germinate.
Can you guess where this is? Can you imagine a dog walking across this? And when a deer walks across, the pods get stuck on their hooves, and then drops of in the next neighborhood--no wonder they are everywhere (goatheads AND deer). Does anyone know if goatheads are on the noxious weeds list for Alamosa?

When you see the plants I am pulling up in Mom's Garden, don't think I'm crazy (maybe a little). I'm actually clearing little spots for new perennials. And... some perennials I planted earlier this year have been totally smothered, so I'm giving them some sunlight before winter. I'm also making room for all the Echinacea I purchased in August with the donation from Jeff N Linette Escheman --so excited for next year! Also planting some Euphorbia and lots of sedums. Need to keep the deer away from the sedums with hot pepper wax--has worked all summer. Also...have 36 small hen 'n chicks arriving on Saturday.
All that being said, I will be digging some sizeable clumps of Coronation Gold Yarrow and Rocky Mountain Penstemon and May Night Salvia this weekend--for small donations for the garden. And Russian Sage! If you would like to meet up, give me a call at 719-580-7838. Have a great Labor Day weekend!
