Today local New Mexico McDonald’s Owner/Operators kicked off their 2nd annual literacy partnership with New Mexico Public Education Department at McDonald's located at 1523 4th St. SW in Albuquerque. This program puts over 4,000 bilingual, new books in the hands of kindergarten students this fall to promote literacy and love of reading. Dr. Kurt Steinhaus, NMPED Secretary of Education, spoke at the event, and Albuquerque author Cameron Bourg read his book that was chosen for this program - Charles Reads / Yo Soy Carlos - to students. McDonald’s partner Mile Hi Foods contributed to the program, which ensured even more books could be purchased
In addition, New Mexico Governor Michelle Lujan Grisham hosted an English-language read-aloud video of the book and Dr. Gwen Perea Warniment, Deputy Cabinet Secretary for NMPED did the Spanish read-aloud for use in classrooms where books are distributed. Both videos are posted on the NMPED website. Happy reading!
