BODY SHAPE AND FAT #5: BODY FAT CELLS - You grow fat by eating more while exercising less so that you have excess energy from the calories in your food which gets stored as fat in Fat Cells (see slide). These fat cells are organized into fat in different parts of the body determined by your genes with fat stores in the lower body related to reproduction in women while fat in the upper body and around the intestines is associated with increased inflammation and immunity which increases the risk of disorders of metabolism like diabetes, heart disease, high blood pressure, and common forms of cancer. The Fat Cell has a fat store shown in yellow (see slide) which takes up a large part of the cell, but the Fat Cell is more than a bag of fat. The cell has the same working parts as other cells in your body including Mitochondria to produce biochemical energy as ATP (adenosine triphosphate) for metabolism or heat in special so-called brown or beige fat cells. There is also a nucleus and all the cellular machinery to make and secrete proteins that affect appetite and energy balance, insulin and glucose control, blood pressure, fat metabolism, and formation of new blood vessels in areas of low oxygen (angiogenesis). Everyone has body fat cells that have important functions, but to get the right amount of fat for your body as your Best Personal Shape and % Body Fat have the right amount of Protein at every meal and after exercise together with Balanced Nutrition and a Healthy Active Lifestyle!!! WINTER WEIGHT GAIN #6: FIBER SUPPLEMENTS - Fiber added to your diet as supplements or eaten from fiber-rich fruits and vegetables can help prevent Winter Weight Gain by making you feel fuller after eating and by feeding healthy bacteria in your gut that make messages that go to your brain to help control hunger. This provides some extra energy and the bacteria make smaller Postbiotics that travel to the brain to help control hunger such as Indole Propionic acid. Insoluble fiber does not dissolve in water but remains intact as it travels through the small and large intestine providing bulk and stimulating movement to keep you regular. Fiber is important for digestive health and you need a total of 25 to 40 grams from foods and supplements each day. PERFORMANCE NUTRITION #4: HYDRATION AND THIRST- Water is a major nutrient and the most abundant substance in your body. Your body is over 60% water. When you exercise you lose water in your breath and sweat. Depending on the heat and humidity where you are exercising you can lose between 0.8 and 1.4 liters of water per hour. Sweat glands help your body release heat during exercise to maintain your body temperature. The sweat glands are below the skin and near your blood vessels and put out sweat which contains both water and minerals onto the surface of the skin (see slide). As your body heat evaporates the sweat, heat energy leaves the body just as it takes heat to boil water on your stove. Evaporating one liter of sweat has been shown to remove 573 Calories of heat which helps maintain your body temperature during exercise. You need to replace this lost water to avoid fatigue and muscle cramps. Your best guide to needing more water is thirst. As you lose water, your brain cells shrink and release a hormone (vasopressin also called anti-diuretic hormone) to conserve water in proportion to the thirst you are experiencing (see graph on the slide). This kidney hormone from the brain provides an adaptation to maintain body water and blood volume during exercise but is also critical to survival after an accident or with total starvation. You cannot survive starvation even for a week without water. Drink 250 milliliters of water or Sports Drink every 15 to 20 minutes and sip water whenever you are thirsty to maintain your energy and avoid muscle cramps during Performance Exercise for Balanced Nutrition and a Healthy Active Lifestyle!!!
