Mary Coyle and her husband Walter Coyle had originally opened 5 Mary Coyle® Ice Cream Parlors. The original store was on Exchange Street. In 1951, the Coyles decided to move out west and they sold 4 out of the 5 stores they owned. The store in Highland Square was the last one they sold, and the one still in operation. It was later owned by Jack Coultrap, who had it from 1963 to 1984. It was then purchased by Michael Trecaso, who, at the time, owned Michael Trecaso's Italian Restaurant, near the University of Akron. He eventually moved his business into Mary Coyle® so now you can get great Italian Food and Ice Cream! Mary Coyle® has not changed a bit over the years, and it has a very comfortable atmosphere. It is one of the oldest restaurants still operating in Akron.

After many wonderful years serving the Akron community, our family has made the decision to pass the torch at Mary Coyle. Just as Jack Coultrap passed the torch to us in 1987, we are now passing it to local entrepreneurs Joe Sofio & Kristy Clark and Michael & Alexandria Considine. 

Together they share a deep appreciation for Mary Coyle’s history and a passion for preserving the tradition, quality, and community spirit that have made this Highland Square favorite so special for generations.

We are incredibly grateful for the loyal customers, employees, and friends who have supported our family over the years. We are excited to see Joe, Kristy, Michael, and Alexandria carry this beloved Akron tradition into its next chapter. We know Mary Coyle is in great hands and can’t wait to see what the future holds.

Thank you for allowing us to be part of so many memories, summer nights, family traditions, first dates, celebrations and every day treats.
