Another common question I get is, How do you know which bee is the queen? And how is the queen chosen? In reality, queens are not chosen. They are born. πŸ‘‘πŸ

It begins when the worker bees in the hive select a tiny larvae (less than a day old!) and begin feeding that larvae a special diet of royal jelly. By feeding it this special food, the larvae develops into a queen rather than a regular worker bee.

As this photo shows, the queen bee clearly looks different from all the other bees in the hive. She has a shiny thorax and a long abdomen so that she can lay the thousands of eggs needed to keep her colony going.

Want to know what bees do in the winter? Read below

I am often asked what my bees do during the winter. One common misconception is that they hibernate. In reality, they are very much awake inside their hives!

In the winter, honeybees cluster together in a ball roughly the size of a basketball. By flexing their wing muscles (the same muscles they use to fly), they are able to generate warmth and hold the cluster at about 85-90 degrees. The bees take turns shifting from the inside to the outside of the cluster so that everyone can stay warm. The queen is always kept at the center of the cluster.

In about a week, around the winter solstice, they will raise the core temperature of their cluster to 93 degrees. This is because the queen begins to lay eggs again around that time, and the bees must keep the brood at a constant 92-93 degrees.

By the time spring arrives, the hive will be bursting with new bees, ready to take over the hive’s duties from the spent winter bees. 🐝

Looking for a way to add a little sweetness to your holiday? Beekeepers across Iowa have the perfect solution, honey. Indulging in a little honey is not only delicious, but it ultimately supports beekeepers as they work to maintain a healthy population of pollinators so vital to all of agriculture.

Terry Young recently joined the fraternity of beekeeping enthusiasts, a tradition first recorded in centuries old cave paintings discovered in Spain. After working for over forty years in the engineering side of the food processing industry, he returned to the Adair county farm where he grew up. Since the land is rented out, he didn’t have the traditional Iowa farm chores to do like when he was a boy. Still, summoning his entrepreneurial spirit, he came up with a plan to establish Ter-Bear Honey in partnership with his cousin, Nettie Payne.

The Ter-Bear hives are located on the Young family property; this gives the bees access to all the nectar and pollen they need from plants growing in neighboring fields of soybeans, hay fields, set aside acres, and field borders. Hives are placed strategically to make sure the bees have easy access to water sources, too. Young says that bees may fly as far as three miles to find a food source. Neighbors report that since the establishment of hives, they see some trees bearing fruit for the first time. Scientific data does show that a larger number of pollinators in an area can benefit the environment and it is quite possible his bees are pollinating fruit trees in the neighborhood.

As with most sectors of agricultural production, beekeeping comes with multiple seasonal tasks that must be completed according to nature's schedule. Right now, Young is busy preparing the hives for winter. While honey is left in the hives for the bees to feed on during the winter, they may need supplemental food. Young typically provides granulated sugar and protein patties to increase survivability during the coming cold weather.
While the honey business, like all agriculture production, carries seasonal demands, this niche enterprise does require a wide range of expertise. Young describes himself as a producer, processor, and marketer all wrapped up into one when it comes to the fledgling business.

Once the honeybees are securely in their clusters for the winter months, Young can turn more attention to marketing this year's sweet harvest. He is happy to offer direct farm sales. β€œLocals are still getting used to the idea that they can just pull in and buy honey whenever they want,” notes Young. However, since there are no set hours for on-farm visits and sales, a call ahead is a good idea. One of the benefits of stopping by the farm is the firsthand experience of seeing the operation and what the beekeeper is working on at the moment.

Perhaps beekeeping up close and personal is not your cup of tea, or simply not possible. Not to worry. Connecting by social media is an option. Young’s business partner, Nettie, keeps the Ter-Bear page up-to-date and makes it easy to order products to be delivered to your door. The page is filled with videos of Young at work, demonstrating the processes involved in harvesting and processing the honey for those curious to explore the world of bees and beekeepers.

The Ter-Bear line of honey is making its presence known throughout the community. Adair’s famous Zipp's Pizzaria serves as another outlet for the honey. After participating in Produce in the Park Atlantic, Iowa all summer, Young is headed to holiday and winter events. He plans to be at the vendor fair held in conjunction with "Christmas in Casey" on Saturday, December 12th from 9:00 AM to 1:00 PM for anyone interested in stopping by.

Although raw honey is the centerpiece of Ter-Bear sales, just in time for the holidays, cinnamon-infused honey has been added to the product line. Wondering how cinnamon honey is created? Visit the Ter-Bear page for an informative video demonstration. While you are there, check out the special holiday box, two 16-ounce jars of honey bottled in special muth jars - one raw honey, one cinnamon-infused, and a honey dipper. Great stocking stuffers, smaller jars topped with holiday-themed lids, are available for just $3.00.

β€œI’m having fun in my new role of beekeeper. There is lots to learn, and many avenues to explore. We are just beginning to evaluate how we might use the wax,” shares Young. Young is enjoying the whole concept of niche agriculture, and future plans are focused on specializing in beekeeping.

Consider supporting Iowa beekeepers this holiday season. They are playing an important role in helping to maintain the population of local pollinators; at the same time, beekeepers like Young are reaping the rewards of mankind's oldest and most reliable sweetener, a time-honored tradition for over 9000 years.
