At SAFI, we're passionate about empowering our interns with practical skills and real-world knowledge. Today was a perfect example! Our interns from various academic institutions, including Mountains of the Moon University, Kabale University, Uganda Martyrs University, and Makerere University, were in the field, getting their hands dirty with soil sampling and on-the-spot soil testing.

They used an innovative soil testing kit developed by the Department of Soil Science of Makerere University to analyze levels of nitrogen, phosphorus, potassium, and organic matter. This isn't just theory; it's vital, hands-on experience that will directly impact their future careers in agriculture. We believe in learning by doing, and our interns are consistently rising to the challenge!

Over the past few weeks, we had a highly productive visit from Patrick Walusansa of FOAG - Farmers Overseas Action Group right here in Kasese! It was a great opportunity to discuss FOAG's upcoming Homebank (Silo) project, where our organization has been identified as a potential partner.

As part of FOAG's assessment, we visited several of the farmer groups we, at SAFI, support. This direct engagement helps gather valuable insights from the ground to inform the project's design. We're excited about the potential of the Homebank (Silo) project and look forward to continued collaboration with FOAG as they prepare to launch a pilot next harvest season.

We are currently collaborating on the "Towards Indigeneous Crops Conservation through Knowledge and Capacity Development (TICC)" project in partnership with the Swedish University of Agricultural Sciences (SLU) and Uganda Christian University.

We are jointly producing knowledge about traditional techniques for cultivating and conserving indigenous crops, including seed selection, propagation techniques, and maintaining varietal diversity, through horizontal information sharing.

By doing this, at leat 200 young farmers and rural women that we support will be able to contribute effectively to decision-making processes and establish profitable, sustainable businesses using local crops.
