In the second 'edition' of Bird of the Week we've chosen a less regular visitor to the lodge, namely the White-browed Coucal. A Cuckoo-like bird, we spotted this one happily sharing a perch with a Black-eyed Bulbul and thought that there was a chance the Bulbul was it's 'reluctant parent' but apparently the White-browed Coucal is non-parisitic and they raise their young themselves, with the males providing not only the construction of the nest but also most of the incubation, feeding and care of the young!

It can be found over large parts of Sub-Saharan Africa but as it often 'skulks' in dense shrubbery and waterside vegetation it can be difficult to spot... luckily for us this one chose to 'hide in plain sight' in a less than dense bush!

Feeding mostly on insects they will occasionally take other young birds or eggs, and their distinctive call - which resembles water pouring from a bottle - is said to signal impending rainfall, earning the bird the nickname "Rainbird."

Visit us Bullbush River Camp soon to try and spot this beauty for yourself!

Bird of the Week!

First in a (hopefully - internet connection allowing!) regular feature on birds spotted at Bullbush River Camp , Ishasha... we really are a 'birder's paradise' with 100s of different varieties being seen on a regular basis...

The first in the series is the Red-headed (or Red-faced) Lovebird, and below is a picture taken recently from our raised bar of an adult male.

Typically growing up to about 15 cms (6 inches) they live in colonies of about 30 birds, travelling long distances to forage for food before returning to their communal roosting site, usually along the edge of a forest. No surprises that they are often seen around the lodge then as we are located directly opposite the virgin forest of Kigezi Wildlife Park!

Reaching sexual maturity at about 10 months these gorgeous birds mate for life which can last for up to 15 years; after times of stress they can often be seen to be feeding each other to re-establish the love connection - something that maybe us humans could learn from! Just to make them just that little bit more adorable (and human...?) if separated from their partner temporarily or permanently, they often also show signs of pining and erratic behaviour... bless.
