The company was founded in 1905 by German Hans Wilsdorf and his son-in-law Alfred Davis as Wilsdorf and Davis, which would later become Rolex SA, in London, England[1]. Існує також кілька "неофіційних" назв: з англомовної вимови абревіатури "Бі-Ем-Дабл-ю «для мотоциклів фірми історично склалася назва» Бімер" (англ. beemer), для автомобілів-схоже, але не рівнозначне "біммер" (англ. bimmer)[4]. У Росії для позначення марки можуть також застосовуватися назви "Беха», «біммер», «бумер» [5], в Греції — «beba», в арабських країнах —" BM " [6].
