Juicy plums are excellent for eating out of hand, but baking with them is one of the finest pleasures of summer. Their flesh is sweet and their skins are tart, so they inspire use in tarts, crumbles, muffins, coffee cakes -- or in this case, an easy walnut cake.

The walnuts also give moistness and earthy flavor to the cake, which is heavily scented with the zest of an entire lemon. The whole dough can be made in a few minutes in the food processor.

You will either love me or hate me for this. It’s that easy.

Homemade chocolate pudding usually requires a lot of stirring on top of the stove and often results in messy, sometimes scorched, pots. You can achieve the same thing without the fuss in the microwave by cooking a mixture of milk, eggs, sugar, cornstarch and cocoa in two to three increments at high heat, stirring in between to distribute the heat.

The trick is to let the mixture get hot enough for the cornstarch to cook, which will be obvious when you stir the pudding and it is thick enough to leave a trail. It’s so simple.

My father, being of solid German stock, is naturally a connoisseur of all things potato. In particular, he loves nothing more than very crispy, shredded homemade hash browns for breakfast with his eggs.

Now, there are many ways of frying up potatoes for breakfast, and I think we do all of them.

The beauty of this banana bread recipe is you don't need a fancy mixer! A mixing bowl, a fork to whisk the eggs and a sturdy spoon to mix the batter are all you need. The sugar amount is flexible. The original recipe called for a cup of white sugar, but most people, including me, do just fine with 3/4 of a cup, and many are happy with a 1/2 cup.

You can toss in a cup of chopped nuts, raisins, or chocolate chips if you want, or put the batter into muffin tins and make banana nut muffins instead. You can even go a step further and make chocolate banana bread.

When it comes to granola, I call my husband The Beast. For him, granola is breakfast, brunch, lunch, dinner, dessert, and snack. Because of this we go through it very quickly, and so every Sunday I replenish our supply so that The Beast may be fed.

For a long time this meant cranking on the oven, which is the traditional method of making granola. And let’s be honest, that’s just a pain. It really is. Hence the better, easier way to make granola: the slow cooker.
