|From Art Festival to Local Action: A Decade of Practice and Transformation in Chenglong Wetlands|
Many thanks to the Taiwan Visual Art Archive (TVAA) for inviting me to Tainan to share the journey of art and community action in Chenglong Wetlands. Even after two hours of presentation and conversation, there was still so much more we wanted to explore together.
The Taiwan Visual Art Archive is dedicated to documenting Taiwan’s art history and promoting Taiwanese arts and culture through research, publication, and public engagement. Since last year, TVAA has been commissioned by the Yunlin County Government to conduct an archival survey and publication project on the history of art in Yunlin. Through this project, a chance encounter at Chenglong 82 eventually led to this meaningful exchange.
More than a decade ago, the international environmental art festival brought significant changes to Chenglong Wetlands and the surrounding community. Over time, the community began organizing its own artist residencies, transforming art from an annual festival into an ongoing form of local action—one that responds to environmental change, connects residents, and strengthens relationships within the community.
This journey would not have been possible without the support of public agencies, local residents, artists, volunteers, and many partners. Together, they have helped this once-wounded landscape develop the strength to transform and regenerate.
In 2026, we mark the tenth anniversary of Bridge to the Future, an artwork created collaboratively by Chenglong residents. This is an opportunity to look back on what residents and partners have accomplished together, reflect on the environmental changes that have taken place in Chenglong Wetlands, and ask how art can continue to accompany the community into its next decade.
Please save the date—Saturday, October 10—and join us in Chenglong. Let’s gather, walk through the landscape, share our memories, and imagine the next chapter of Chenglong Wetlands together.
