明天我要帶小姨子和她的三個兒子，來一趟四天的加拿大卑詩省南部之旅。這是三個男孩第一次來加拿大。我們會沿著海天公路一路往上，經過我從小長大的家鄉 Lillooet，再到 Kelowna 走走海灘和果園，現在正是水蜜桃和櫻桃最好吃的季節，最後到 Osoyoos，那裡有溫暖的湖水和一望無際的沙漠陽光。

我很期待透過他們的眼睛，重新看看這些地方。

接下來這幾天，我會把照片陸續發在留言區，跟大家分享我們的旅程。

This photo was taken 21 years ago in Mexico. I was 26, and it was my first time travelling outside of Canada and the United States. I still remember how big the world felt.

Tomorrow I'm taking my sister-in-law and her three boys on a four day trip around southern British Columbia. It's the boys' first time in Canada. Up the Sea to Sky highway, through to Lillooet where I grew up, then on to Kelowna for the beaches and the orchards, peaches and cherries at their best right now, and down to Osoyoos for the warm lake and the desert sun.

I'm looking forward to seeing it all through their eyes.

艾娣這個夏天過得很精彩。在加拿大高中畢業後，她終於踏上了嚮往已久的日本之旅，這是她第一次去日本，玩得非常開心。這張照片是她特別想跟大家分享的。

如今，她回到了台灣的家，暑假期間會在店裡幫忙。能有艾娣親自在店裡迎接大家，一張屬於我們家的熟悉臉孔，對我來說意義非凡。看著她成為這個我們多年來傾注心血的地方的一份子，有種說不出的特別。

Heidi has had quite a summer. After graduating from high school in Canada, she finally took her first trip to Japan, something she'd wanted to do for a long time, and loved every minute of it. This photo is one she wanted to share.

And now she's at her Taiwan home, working at the restaurant for the summer. It means a lot to have Heidi there in person, a familiar face of our family there to welcome you. There's something special about her being part of the place we've poured our heart and soul into over the years.

外婆上個月滿100歲了。
她不是個喜歡慶祝的人，
所以生日就這樣安安靜靜地過去了，
這正合她的意。

一百年，
想到一個人在一個世紀裡看過的一切，
我真的不知道該從哪裡說起。
有戰亂，也有平靜的早晨。
有人離開，也有人出生。
而這一切之中，食物從未停過。
大片的菜園，所有東西都親手從頭做起，
孩子們就是靠她雙手做的食物養大的。

我從她身上學到很多關於新鮮食材的事。
那麼多種類的食物，而且總是在剛剛好的熟度。
沒有一樣東西被浪費，也沒有一樣東西被匆忙帶過。

我所懂得的許多東西都來自她，
有些是她直接教的，有些則是透過我母親傳下來的，
而母親也是先跟她學的。
我只希望能透過我的料理，把這一點點再傳下去，
讓大家重新嚐到手作食物的味道。

My grandmother turned 100 last month. She isn't one for celebrating, so her birthday came and went quietly, the way she prefers it. A hundred years. When I think about everything a person sees in a century, I don't even know where to begin. Wars and quiet mornings. People lost and people born. And through all of it, the food never stopped. Huge gardens, everything cooked from scratch, her children raised on what her own hands made.

I learned a lot about fresh food from her. So many varieties of things, and always at just the right ripeness. Nothing was wasted and nothing was rushed.

So much of what I know came from her, whether directly, or passed down through my mother, who learned it from her first. I can only hope that through my cooking I pass a little of it on again, and help people rediscover what home made food tastes like.

我一直很想把攝影學好。我念書的時候學校沒有這門課，從來沒機會好好學。還好大女兒艾娣高中選了攝影，她在學，我也跟著一起學。

Miranda 是我們收養的眾多浪貓之一，也是艾娣很多攝影作業裡的主角。

我們餵養、結紮水湳洞的浪貓，需要的時候也帶牠們去看醫生。以前有段時間，客人會拍店附近的浪貓，然後標記我們，老實說那時候標記甜蜜屋的貓照片，比我們食物的照片還多。這些年慢慢變了，但我們對這些貓的愛沒有變。

I've always wanted to be better at photography. My school never offered it as a class, so I never had the chance to learn properly. Luckily for me, Heidi's been taking it in high school, and through her learning, I've been learning too.

Miranda is one of the many stray cats we've helped and taken into our family. She's been the star of a lot of Heidi's class projects.

We feed the cats of Shuinandong and take them for veterinary care when they need it. There was a time when customers would photograph the strays around the restaurant and tag us, and honestly there were more cat photos tagged 甜蜜屋 than photos of our food. That's changed over the years. Our love for these cats hasn't.

這禮拜對我們家來說，是很特別的一週。我們的大女兒 Heidi 在加拿大高中畢業了。
最近我常常回想起這十八年來，我們一起走過的時光。她求學的前半段在台灣，後半段在加拿大。我想起第一天送她去上幼兒園的模樣，想起學校對面那間早餐店、我們一起吃過的每一頓早餐，一路到她國小畢業，再到她在加拿大展開全新的生活。當爸爸，是我這輩子最美好的經歷，我不會用任何東西來交換。

她接下來會先到國外走走，不久後就會回到台灣，七月中開始會在店裡幫忙。好好休息一段時間之後，明年她會再回加拿大念大學。如果大家有空，今年夏天或秋天歡迎來店裡走走，當面跟她說聲恭喜！

It's been a big week for our family. Our elder daughter, Heidi, graduated from high school here in Canada.

I've found myself reminiscing a lot lately about our time together over the past 18 years. The first half of her schooling was in Taiwan, the second half in Canada. I think about the first day we brought her to preschool, all the morning breakfasts at the little shop across from the school, all the way up through her elementary graduation and her new life in Canada. Parenting has been an amazing experience, and I wouldn't trade it for the world.

She's travelling abroad for a bit, but she'll land in Taiwan soon and will be working in the restaurant starting mid-July. After a well-deserved break, she'll head back to Canada for university next year. If you find the time, come out to the restaurant later this summer or fall and say congratulations to her!

That's a good friend of mine in the photo, caught mid-jump on the West Coast Trail on the wild coast of Canada. The two of us hiked it together back in May 2007, a week out there with everything we needed on our backs, walking 75 km of rugged coastline. It's still one of the best things I've ever done.

The weather here is lovely right now and Taiwan has trails everywhere you look. Bring a friend, pick a path, and spend the day outside together. And pack something good to eat while you're at it. 這位是我的外婆。她下個月就要滿100歲了。整整一個世紀的生命、愛與照顧身邊的人。我最近為她做了頓飯……看我的衣服應該就看得出來了 😄

Mother's Day may have already passed for some of us, but on the other side of the world it's still being celebrated today and we think that's a beautiful thing. Love for the women who raised us doesn't need a calendar.

Watching a live performance at the Orpheum was a humbling reminder of what true artistry requires. Hearing a pianist like Jaeden Izik-Dzurko perform makes you realize the tens of thousands of hours of dedication needed to reach that level of mastery. It was also inspiring to see so many young musicians on stage, and I believe it is so important to support people who are in the pursuit of their passion and their craft.

​It made me reflect on my own work at the restaurant. While a musician spends a lifetime on their instrument, I thought about the hundreds of hours I have spent just to perfect a single home-style dish to ensure the recipe is honoured correctly. Seeing that kind of discipline on stage is a powerful reminder of the focus required to master any skill. I hope more people make the time to see a live performance and witness the results of a craft that takes years of quiet practice to build.

​在奧芬劇院觀看現場演出，讓我謙卑地體會到真正的藝術造詣需要付出什麼。聆聽像 Jaeden Izik-Dzurko 這樣的鋼琴家演奏，讓人深刻感受到要達到那樣的境界，背後是數萬小時的專注與投入。看到舞台上有這麼多年輕的音樂家也讓我深受啟發，我深信支持那些正在追求熱情與磨練技藝的人是多麼重要。
