“Between the Impressionists and Traces” is a collective book curation that presents artists as the impressionists of the photography and performance art world. Their works all share the same subject matter, the human body, a flexible subject through which the internal world is made visible as a fragile yet textured canvas, a wave of emotions, and living evidence of abstraction.
From the photographers Francesca Woodman, Sally Mann, Man Ray, Hans Bellmer, Guy Bourdin, Jeffrey Silverthorne, Lucas Samaras, and Pierre Molinier, to the performance artist Stuart Brisley, these extensive bodies of work exhibit the hauntingly obscured yet indelible trace of life across its varied stages, depths, and interpretations. Each frame carries the deep mark of a distinct artistic language that is aesthetically individual, yet historically connected.
What unites these divergent practices is a shared tension between the fleeting moment of imagination and the time relevance nature of the photographic image. The trace is never purely documentary; instead, it is always motivated by the impression that produced it.
《Between the Impressionists and Traces》 是由法國攝影書店 Worm Room 策劃的攝影書展。本次集結了多位在攝影與行為藝術領域中代表性的印象派藝術家。這些作品皆以「人體」作為共同主題，人體在此為一個具可塑性的媒介，將內在世界具象化為一幅脆弱卻富有質感的畫布，承載著一陣陣流動的情緒，從而成為抽象存在最具體的生命證據。
