SEEKING A REWARD FOR OBEDIENCE TO JESUS' COMMANDMENTS
There is an unwarranted sense of entitlement by us to be rewarded when we have walked in obedience to the commandments of Jesus.
It's almost a case of, "Well Lord, I obeyed and now You owe me!"
However, in John 14:15 (NKJV) Jesus said, “If you love Me, keep My commandments."
We seem to fail to understand the weight and the gravity of simple obedience versus rebellion and stubbornness.
1 Samuel 15:23 ( NKJV)
23 For rebellion is as the sin of witchcraft, And stubbornness is as iniquity and idolatry. Because you have rejected the word of the Lord, He also has rejected you from being king.”
That said, we tend forget that it is because God's relentless and unwavering love, grace and mercy (wrought through the finished work on the cross by Jesus) that we can enter boldly into His throne room of grace.
Jesus sums it up beautifully in Luke 17:7-10 (NKJV) which says, 7 And which of you, having a servant plowing or tending sheep, will say to him when he has come in from the field, ‘Come at once and sit down to eat’? 8 But will he not rather say to him, ‘Prepare something for my supper, and gird yourself and serve me till I have eaten and drunk, and afterward you will eat and drink’? 9 Does he thank that servant because he did the things that were commanded [a]him? I think not. 10 So likewise you, when you have done all those things which you are commanded, say, ‘We are unprofitable servants. We have done what was our duty to do.’ ”
The priceless ransom paid for our sins is so much more than the punishment we truly deserved.
Have a blessed day.
