WEAK-END CINE間 ร่วมกับ Smokin' fish และ The Remedy ชวนคุณชมหนึ่งในหนังที่สำคัญที่สุดของโลกภาพยนตร์จากคนทำหนังที่เป็นคนสำคัญที่สุดคนหนึงใน The Color of Promegarnates (1969,Sergei Parajanov)
The Color of Pomegranates เป็นหนังแนวอวองการ์ดปี 1969 จากโซเวียต-อาร์เมเนียที่ได้รับการยกย่องอย่างกว้างขวางจากผู้กำกับและนักวิจารณ์ทั่วโลกว่า เป็นหมุดหมายสำคัญในประวัติศาสตร์ภาพยนตร์ และเป็นหนึ่งในภาพยนตร์ที่ยิ่งใหญ่ที่สุดตลอดกาล
สำหรับคนดูหนัง นี่ยังเป็นหนังที่ "ดูไม่รู้เรื่อง" หนักข้อที่สุดเรื่องหนึ่งด้วย ซึ่งเอาเข้าจริงแล้วก็ไม่ใช่ปฏิกิริยาเกินคาดเดา เพราะแม้ตัวหนังจะว่าด้วยชีวประวัติของ ซายัต-โนวา กวีและนักดนตรีพเนจรคนสำคัญของอาร์เมเนียยุคศตวรรษที่ 18 แต่ผู้กำกับ-เขียนบท เซอร์เกย์ ปาราจานอฟ ก็ไม่ได้ต้องการเล่าเรื่องแบบปกติธรรมดา ...สิ่งที่เขาอยากทำคือ การถ่ายทอดชีวิตของกวีด้วย "กวีนิพนธ์ทางภาพ"

เทคนิคที่ปาราจานอฟใช้ มีคำเรียกว่า "Tableaux Vivants" หรือ "ภาพที่มีชีวิต" หมายถึงการใช้ภาพนิ่ง (ที่อาจมีการเคลื่อนไหวแค่เล็กน้อย) เพื่อจำลองสไตล์ของภาพจิตรกรรม โดยเขาได้แรงบันดาลใจจากภาพวาดโบราณของอาร์เมเนีย (Armenian Illuminated Manuscripts) และภาพเขียนย่อส่วนของเปอร์เซีย (Persian Miniatures) เป็นหลัก
เวลาดูหนังเรื่องนี้ เราจึงรู้สึกได้ว่ากล้องแทบไม่ได้ขยับเท่าไหร่ ตัวละครก็แทบไม่ค่อยพูดจาอะไรกันนัก จะมีก็แค่เสียงดนตรีและการขับร้องเป็นระยะ ขณะที่ตัวภาพจะถูกจัดวางอย่างประณีต และเต็มไปด้วยสัญลักษณ์ที่สื่อความหมายถึงวัฒนธรรมต่าง ๆ ของอาร์เมเนีย โดยโครงหลักของหนังเล่าชีวิตของซายัต-โนวา 8 ช่วงคือ วัยเด็ก, วัยหนุ่ม, ช่วงที่อยู่ในราชสำนัก, ในอาราม, ช่วงความฝัน, วัยชรา, ทูตแห่งความตาย และความตาย (ทั้งหมดนี้มีนักแสดงหญิงชื่อ โซฟิโก เชียวเรลี เป็นดาราหลักที่รับบทบาทถึง 6 ตัวละคร)

ปาราจานอฟทำหนังเรื่องนี้ในยุคที่โซเวียตมีการควบคุมศิลปะอย่างเข้มงวด ตอนแรกเขาตั้งชื่อมันว่า Sayat-Nova แต่เจ้าหน้าที่ไม่ยอม ด้วยเหตุผลว่าหนังลึกลับซับซ้อนเกินไป ไม่สามารถทำให้ชนชั้นแรงงานเข้าใจชีวิตกวีคนสำคัญของชาติได้ จึงบังคับให้เปลี่ยนชื่อเป็น The Color of Pomegranates (สีแห่งทับทิม) เพื่อลดความสำคัญในฐานะหนังชีวประวัติลงเสีย (แถมเวอร์ชั่นที่ฉายในรัสเซียตอนนั้นยังโดนเอามาตัดต่อใหม่ให้ "ดูง่ายขึ้น" ด้วย)
แต่แม้จะแก้ไขแล้ว หนังก็ยังถูกจำกัดการฉาย ร้ายกว่านั้นคือปาราจานอฟโดนรัฐตามเพ่งเล็ง และถึงขั้นถูกจำคุกในเวลาต่อมาด้วยข้อหาต่าง ๆ ซึ่งนักวิจารณ์มองว่า เป็นผลมาจากการที่เขาทำหนังขัดต่อแนวทาง "สัจนิยมสังคมนิยม" (Socialist Realism) ของรัฐบาลนั่นเอง

ในปี 2014 หนังเรื่องนี้ได้รับการบูรณะแบบดิจิทัล 4K โดย The Film Foundation ของ มาร์ติน สกอร์เซซี ร่วมกับสถาบันอื่น ๆ โดยใช้ฟิล์มต้นฉบับเวอร์ชันอาร์เมเนียที่สมบูรณ์ที่สุด ทำให้ในที่สุดโลกก็ได้เห็นความงดงามของสีสันและรายละเอียดที่ปาราจานอฟตั้งใจไว้แต่แรก
สกอร์เซซีบอกว่า "การได้ดูหนังของปาราจานอฟเหมือนกับการได้เปิดประตูเข้าสู่โลกแห่งความฝัน เขาไม่ได้ทำหนังที่เล่าเรื่อง แต่เขาทำหนังที่เกี่ยวกับความรู้สึกและจิตวิญญาณ"

WEAK-END CINE間, in collaboration with Smokin' fish and The Remedy, invites you to a screening of one of the most significant works in cinema history by one of the world's most influential filmmakers: The Color of Promegarnates (1969,Sergei Parajanov)
The Color of Pomegranates is a 1969 avant-garde Soviet-Armenian film widely acclaimed by directors and critics around the world as a major landmark in cinema history and one of the greatest films of all time.
For general audiences, however, this remains one of the most notoriously "incomprehensible" films ever made. Honestly, this reaction is not entirely unexpected. Although the film is a biography of Sayat-Nova, a seminal 18th-century Armenian poet and troubadour, director-writer Sergei Parajanov had no intention of telling a conventional story. Instead, what he wanted to achieve was to capture the life of a poet through "visual poetry."
The technique Parajanov employed is known as "Tableaux Vivants" or "living pictures," which involves using static frames (featuring only minimal movement) to replicate the style of paintings. His primary inspirations were ancient Armenian illuminated manuscripts and Persian miniatures.
When watching this film, you will notice that the camera barely moves, and the characters rarely speak to one another, save for intermittent music and chanting. Meanwhile, each image is meticulously composed and packed with symbols representing various facets of Armenian culture. The core structure of the film tracks eight chapters of Sayat-Nova's life: Childhood, Youth, The Court of the Prince, The Monastery, The Dream, Old Age, The Angel of Death, and Death. (Notably, actress Sofiko Chiaurelli serves as the principal star, playing six different roles across these segments).
Parajanov made this film during an era of strict Soviet censorship over the arts. He originally titled it Sayat-Nova, but authorities rejected it, claiming the film was too cryptic and failed to make the life of the nation's great poet accessible to the working class. They forced him to change the title to The Color of Pomegranates to downplay its status as a biographical film. (Furthermore, the version released in Russia at the time was re-edited to make it "easier to follow").
Yet, even after these modifications, the film's distribution was heavily restricted. Worse still, Parajanov became a target of state surveillance and was subsequently imprisoned on various charges. Critics viewed his imprisonment as a direct consequence of making films that defied the government’s officially mandated "Socialist Realism" guidelines.
In 2014, the film underwent a 4K digital restoration by Martin Scorsese’s The Film Foundation in collaboration with other institutions. Utilizing the most complete surviving Armenian negative, the project finally allowed the world to witness the true brilliance of the colors and details Parajanov had originally intended.
As Scorsese noted:
"Watching Parajanov's films is like opening a door into a world of dreams. He didn’t make films that narrated stories; he made films about feelings and the spirit."
