Hello all, this isn't an ad or our usual delicious content, but more of a public service announcement to bring awareness to a scam seemingly targeting small restaurant businesses like ours.

The set-up:
Mandarin-speaking "customer" called us to make a reservation for 12 pax, saying that we were highly recommended by their "superior" who loved his dining experience with us, promising to spend a ludicrous amount of money for their dinner. Call ended on a good note with a confirmed reservation, with an agreed menu costing upwards of $4XX++ per pax.

The scam:
He called back a while later and requested for a few bottles of an expensive red wine label, which we do not carry. We were asked to purchase the bottles on their behalf, which we can then charge to their dinner bill. He then proceeded to send us a QR code, saying that we can purchase and pay for those wines from the "shop".

When we checked, the QR code was to an individual's mobile number, not to a merchant. Feeling suspicious, we requested for a 50% deposit upfront since it was a large amount, and the whole time, he refused to name their "superior" who introduced us to him.
After more to & fro and with him cajoling then raising his voice, and us insisting on the deposit, he hung up and has been uncontactable since.

One of our staff then informed us that he encountered the same scam at his previous place of employment back in Malaysia. Exact same M.O. - large reservation, promising exorbitant spending, then requesting for expensive wines to be purchased by the restaurant prior by transferring money to a specific account, then no contact after.

It is unfortunate that this is the state of the world we live in now. We were lucky not to have suffered any losses, but if these scammers are so brazen to use the exact same method with different businesses, it is more than likely that they've had some success.
