-Delicious Traditional Char Kway Teow that is used to patronised by MediaCorp artistes, Overseas artistes and regular patrons since it's founded at Armenian Street (Near ROM Building). Tan Chong Chia started off alone selling his mouth-drooling through push-cart stall, then came to a small coffeeshop at corner of Armenian St. Back then, business slowly picked up and Mr. Tan's wife helped him out to support 4 sons. The couple strived hard to give the best Char Kway Teow to patrons. As time goes by, in order to beat the long queue during lunch hours, Mr. Tan's eldest son, Mr Tan Soo Kiat helped them out and also to learn the unique skills to fry delicious Char Kway Teow. If quality can be measured by the length of one’s apprenticeship, then eldest son, Tan Soo Kiat beats all hands down. In 1971, he began helping his father. Mr Tan assisted his father and was only allowed to helm the wok when his
father ran errands – until the senior finally retired in 2000. And it seems all that training has paid off. However, a pity, at Year 2007, the building @ Armenian St was due to return to government for redevelopment, hence Mr Tan & his famous Armenian St Char Kway Teow are forced to move out. Armenian St. Char Kway Teow travelled a few places till it settled down at a new vibrant & buzzling neighbourhood coffeeshop located at Sengkang. Today, his signature cooking style of frying with a lively bounce “so my legs won’t get too tired” still draws queues during lunch hours & weekends. For just $3, you get to eat Armenian St Char Kway Teow old school taste, which remained the same over many years. Mr Tan's mix of kway teow, egg noodles paired with generous serving of chinese sausage, fishcake, egg & fresh cockles are redolent with pork lard and chopped garlic.
