Wah Yuen Porridge

Wah Yuen Porridge A time tested taste that has people both young and old from all reaches of Singapore drawn to its magnetic taste and the charm of ever present smiles.

Read our full description to trace the journey and development of this landmark cuisine! Singaporeans often look back wistfully at the good ol’ days where hawker centres were not just a place to grab a quick meal, but a hive of activity where friends and family gathered to join meandering queues amidst the heat of the bustle, the aroma and the sea of people all with a common goal – to seek and con

quer the best foods that our streets provide. It was the very heart and soul of our culture that some lament, have been sterilized by over-elaborate and artificially immaculate re-planning of our contemporary hawker centres as well as the changing demographic of our hawkers. A trip to Wah Yuen Porridge and Chicken Rice provides the old-school customer-oriented experience where service always comes with a smile and humanity, in the quiet comfort and cleanliness that has come to enhance our hawker culture. With its beginnings dating back to an almost forgotten time where food was hawkered in self-made pushcarts along the streets over half a century ago, Wah Yuen Porridge and Chicken Rice is a time tested taste that will tantalise your senses at every turn. The story is a compelling one that our porridge master tells with great relish upon question, and makes for great companionship while savouring this delight. Today, nearing the dusk of its second generation, the traditional Cantonese fare is paving new standards of porridge-perfection with its uncompromisingly fresh ingredients and time-mastered painstaking preparation. With a recipe unique to the family, the unforgettably exquisite taste of Wah Yuen Porridge is the collusion of years of innovation and hard work as well as the dedication and spirit of excellence of the stoic couple behind this master class dish. Moving away from the streets, Wah Yuen has had its own journey, creating its base at 51 Neil Road, offering a culinary sanctuary to office workers, nearby residents and families who had the fine taste to appreciate its richness. Next was a short but fruitful stint at Amara Shopping Centre (adjoining Amara Hotel), where it garnered much praise and recognition from a diverse and international crowd of tourists, corporate personnel stopping over in Singapore, curious travellers and even the occasional celebrity. Now at its current home at Telok Blangah Drive, it squandered no time to establish its name as a firm favourite amongst the heartlands. With a huge fan base of regulars fervently following their trail who journey down in droves with family and friends alike from all parts of the country, the taste of Wah Yuen Porridge and Chicken Rice has definitely diffused into the hearts and minds of Singaporeans. Lose yourself in the timeless composition of the signature boat-styled porridge, be wholly filled by the fragrance and smoothness of a plate of Singapore's most popular Chicken Rice, and complete this cultural experience with a dish of raw fish - yet another signature dish of Wah Yuen that will leave a strong impression on your taste buds. Wah Yuen Porridge and Chicken Rice is where tradition rises above the hustle and bustle of life to leave you in wonderment of the magic of Singapore's old-styled hawker fare. It is not merely a bowl of porridge or a plate of raw fish, it is very much a lesson in our culture you can taste. Play a trick on the sands of time by immersing yourself in this nostalgic experience and be turned back to a time where things were simple and good. Simply good.

Dear friends,

This comes as a belated announcement to what some of you might have already perceived - a particularly poignant one on National Day, under the flag of a nation which has given us so much, and to which Wah Yuen Porridge has contributed the best years of their lives to.

It is with regret that we announce the permanent closure of Wah Yuen Porridge after around 30 years of service as a sole proprietor - starting from the early 1990s at Neil Road, crossing into the new millennium at Amara Shopping Centre, and helping a glorious 16 years at Telok Blangah Food Centre.

Not forgetting of course, the many years prior serving at Tiong Bahru Hawker Centre, the original source of our family's Cantonese porridge cuisine.

We truly appreciate each and every one of you, our customers, neighbours and friends, who have greeted us with your kind smiles and friendliness over the years - it has been your unfailing presence through the best and toughest of times that inspired us to give our best to serve you chicken rice, raw fish and congee week-in, week-out.

Thank you very much for the love, and we invite you to extend that same love to our original home-base at Tiong Bahru Hawker Centre.

As our humble stall changes hands in time to come, I hope that you might be reminded of Wah Yuen Porridge from time to time, and the small part we played in our community.

Do also continue showering your love and friendliness to Sheila as you spot her on her regular morning walks and breakfasts in and around Telok Blangah.

Stay kind, stay strong, stay warm.

With much love, and signing out,

Wah Yuen Porridge.

Dear friends,

It has been more than a week since we lost our dear Raymond.

On behalf of our family, we would like to thank everyone for the support and care during the recent wake, and for the loving concern which had since followed.

We cannot describe how touched we are to bear testament to Raymond's impact to the community, in the form of family, friends, customers and well wishes from near and far.

While we do not have the words to say more at this time, we are very humbled to have Raymond's story featured and amplified.

A fitting tribute. He was always the one good with words, and with stories to tell.

Raymond, we miss you every day.

With love,

Wah Yuen Porridge

[Raymond is Home]

Dear friends of Wah Yuen Porridge, 華園粥品,

Our dearest Yip Kwok Weng, fondly known to many as Raymond, Ray, "porridge uncle" or Uncle Raymond, was called home to be with the Lord on the morning of 15 February 2023.

He passed away peacefully with his wife, Sheila, and their three sons, Shawn, Nicholas and Leon, by his bedside.

We mourn the loss of our beloved husband/father/brother/uncle/father-in-law/cousin, a celebrated presence within our culinary landscape and an ever-smiling, ever-ready-to-chat pillar of our community who will be fondly remembered not just for the porridge he cooks, but also for being the big hearted person he is.

We invite you to share a moment of remembrance with us to celebrate his achievements in life, among us who love him, and fittingly, right next to his beloved stomping ground, Telok Blangah Food Centre. Details are found below.

Our Ray of sun will be forever shining in our hearts.

Raymond is Home.

With love,

Sheila and Family.
