Tokyo Sundubu is a restaurant chain from Japan specializing in spicy Korean bean curd (tofu) stew known as “SUNDUBU”, which is a classic dish in Korean home cooking. With 33 outlets all over Japan since opening in 2006, Tokyo Sundubu opened its 1st overseas outlet in Singapore followed by Vietnam, Thailand, Malaysia and also Indonesia in future. Several years ago, Sundubu, with tofu as the main in
gredient, attracted much attention amidst the “Tofu boom” in the United States as tofu was regarded as a healthy food. This phenomenon led to many Sundubu specialty shops popping up all over the States. While taking advantage of the original Korean taste and style, Tokyo Sundubu created its own version by increasing the variety of ingredients and added original soup bases, making it customizable and fun to eat; yet maintaining its authenticity. Diners are able to choose from two soup bases, “Salt and Ginger” or “Miso”, and 4 different levels of spiciness. A variety of toppings from meat, seafood, vegetables to unconventional ones like butter, cheese and Mentaiko are also available. Tokyo Sundubu’s version is made with soft silky tofu freshly prepared in their kitchen daily. Tofu is naturally gluten-free, contains no cholesterol and is an excellent source of protein, iron and calcium. It is then cooked together with vegetables, meat, shrimps, Asari clams, or other shellfish ingredients and seasoned with homemade red-pepper-based condiment called “Tategi”. The “Tategi” used in the stew contains Capsaicin, a compound usually found in peppers that enhances metabolism and promotes blood circulation. Combining the spicy, tasty Korean stew with the myriad of fresh Japanese ingredients created a culinary match that is healthy and bursting with flavors. Apart from the delicious, healthy food served, the modern chic, stylishly casual interior décor and warm lightings of the restaurants also create an inviting and relaxing ambience for diners.
