Fresh, fragrant and invigorating, wasabi has been used in Japanese tradition in the preparation of sushi for its medicinal herb function which acted as an antidote against food poisoning.
Other than its beneficial effects on health, did you know that wasabi has been used in the development of a fire alarm? When a fire is detected, signals are transmitted immediately to release the pungent smell of wasabi, which is powerful enough to wake people up, even from a deep sleep. The team of researchers led by Imai Makoto, lecturer in the Department of Psychiatry at Shiga University of Medical Science had even won the Ig Nobel prize in chemistry for their development of the wasabi fire alarm in 2011. Isnβt that fascinating?
