A 2003 Menghai tea factory shou puerh I’ve not tasted for a while, but this cold morning made me reach for it. A walk through the plum orchard, sweet, rich, woodsy, musty, velvety smooth and a long finish… a great way to start the day!

2002 CNNP Wild Ye Sheng Puerh… I’ve always found this tea really interesting. A raw purple tea (Assamica dehongensis) unique to Yunnan, its production is limited. A lovely smoky aroma and taste, it has a silky mouthfeel and a crystal clear, deep amber soup with a long finish that induces salivation. I wish I had a few more cakes. It ages beautifully without a hint of bitterness.

A day in the home office means I get to take my time and indulge in some delicious tea while writing. This morning, I couldn’t decide on a robust medium- to full-bodied 2011 Bulang Shan Sheng Puerh (left; 1st)) or the 2015 Gong Mei white tea cake. Both are absolutely delicious, so I decided on both.

I love Bulang mountain Pu’erh. From Menghai County in the Yunnan Province of China, these fermented teas are an acquired taste for many who wish to explore the fascinating and rich culture and practice of tea. This particular cake’s pungent bitter and nutty notes lead to a long finish that levels with sweetness on the tip of the tongue, traveling back along the sides with each infusion, of which there are many. I’m only on the second infusion. The rich color of the soup is a two-second infusion. In other words, I pour water and immediately decant. The aroma, mouth feel, and taste are full, lingering for quite some time. I’ll be sipping this one slowly.

Just as lovely but quite different is the white tea cake. Gong Mei, considered 3rd grade (misleading to be sure), is from Fuding County in Fujian Province. Its distinct honey-like floral and fruity plum notes sweeten the palate; a perfect follow-up to Bulang puerh. I’m on the 9th infusion, and the color is a deep amber still.

Happy cupping 🍵🌱🍃😊

Mi Lan Xiang (honey orchid), to this day, my favorite Dan Cong. The Phoenix Mountains in the southeastern province of Guangdong, China, produces some of the most fragrant single origin teas. Distinct with floral and fruity notes, I always get the loviest sweet lychee scent and taste out of these beautiful leaves.

Looking through my tea storage, I found this 2015 oolong, and oh wow, I couldn’t be more pleased. A long finish and calming effect, I’m only sorry the stash is dwindling.

2011 Nan Jian tuo cha… I’ve been enjoying sheng puerh so much lately that I’ve set aside shou puerh, including this one, for a long while.

It was time to bring it out, and boy oh boy what an amazing well-rounded, balanced, sweet smooth “soup” it delivers. A hint of bark, a touch of caramel, this shou is a delight to drink. So many infusions and it hasn’t let up yet. It continues to put a smile on my face and I’ve been enjoying it for hours now. Good thing come to those who wait 😁

Definitely “happy cupping” to me!

Gifts from my tea sister and expert, Yoon Hee Kim, at TeaClassics Tea & Food Arts with Yoon Hee Kim… I can feel the hands of Korean masters in tea and pottery from start to finish.

This hong cha (红茶 in Chinese, or 홍차 in Korean) from Boseong, S. Korea, is a red tea (referred to as “black tea” in the West) that is fully oxidized. Dark roasted, the delicate young leaves were harvested in 2019, aged in earthenware, and then refined in 2023.

Hand-delivered to me in Sweden (she spoils me rotten 🥰), this artisanal tea has a beautiful grounding energy with fruity notes and hints of cacao, complete with an elegant, lasting finish.

Drinking it in sturdy Korean teaware makes sense, adding to the patina that has evolved over the last 10 years.

This CNNP sheng (raw) puer (or puerh) from Mengku in the Lincang Mountains of the Yunnan province is almost 25 years old. Made of wild-grown purple tip leaves, it doesn’t carry the punch one might expect in a sheng. However, it is delicate, with a sweet taste throughout. Enjoyed in the morning on an empty stomach, it is quite pleasant in that it doesn’t smack you in the face but eases you into the day instead. When writing and editing, this tea is the perfect companion.

Much like wine, tea gets its flavor, mouthfeel, and aroma from different varietals, soil and climate conditions, harvesting and processing techniques, storage, and aging—factors all too numerous to count. Over the years, I’ve learned to stop comparing “cakes” and instead appreciate this organic and ancient beverage. I find it a much more pleasant experience to discuss individual teas on their own merit, getting to know them over time.

In studying tea, nothing should be rushed, including conclusions. This puer is clean with a crystal clear golden “soup” and a flavor reminiscent of honey-roasted cashews. Full of unexpected sweetness that lingers and coats the mouth with a silky feeling... hmmmm

Mengku, meaning “big snow mountain,” at over 3000 meters above sea level where wild tea trees grow and result in some beautiful, heart-warming raw puer… plus the sun is out this morning ☀️☺️

All this to say... TGIF!!!! Have a great weekend, and happy cupping 🍵

A day is never complete without tea 🍵
Energizing yet calming, a cleansing feeling that brings me into focus, I’ve yet to find a more powerful beverage.

Green teas are generally cooling. This Laoshan green from the eastern coastal province of Shandong certainly is refreshing, but its aroma reminiscent of toasted corn and rich with vegetal notes warms the soul and makes it a pleasant winter morning beverage.

Happy cupping!

This morning’s tea is a lightly oxidized (10%, more or less) oolong from Taiwan—2023 Wenshan BaoZhong, with sweet floral and savory vegetal notes, perfectly aligned with the lovely sunny days we’ve been enjoying for the last few weeks.
