Oil and Gas Extraction

Oil and gas extraction involves finding reserves, drilling wells, casing them with steel and cement, and then using natural pressure, pumps, or enhanced recovery (like fracking or gas/chemical injection) to bring the oil and gas to the surface, separating them, and transporting them for processing, a process covered by the "upstream" sector.

This video provides a step-by-step overview of the oil and gas extraction process

Earthquake-resistant design is not simply about making buildings stronger it’s about understanding how structures vibrate and respond to dynamic forces.

⚠️ Resonance can amplify structural movement, while ductility, damping, and energy dissipation help buildings respond more safely.

💡 The goal isn’t to stop a building from moving it’s to make sure it moves safely.

A Crane That Climbs Like a Caterpillar to Install a Wind Turbine
How do you lift heavy turbine components when the installation reaches hundreds of metres above ground?

According to the narration shared by Peter Kappes, a self-climbing crane was used to erect what the post describes as the world’s tallest onshore wind turbine in China, reaching 390 metres (1,280 feet).

The narration describes a 150-ton crane that climbs the turbine tower using clamps and hydraulics. It grips the tower and advances upward in stages, creating the caterpillar-like movement.

By using the turbine tower for support, the crane brings its lifting system closer to the installation level as work progresses.

The post also highlights the difference in ground-space requirements. It states that conventional cranes require approximately 1,000 square metres of prepared ground, while the climbing system needs a “35 by 55” footprint, with minimal site preparation. The narration does not specify the footprint’s units.
The central idea is compelling: a crane that climbs with the structure could change how tall wind turbines are assembled, particularly where ground access and working space are limited.

Could self-climbing cranes reshape the future of wind turbine installation?

Building Prestressed Concrete Digesters Using Climbing Construction
How do you construct large circular treatment tanks while maintaining structural continuity and dimensional accuracy?

At the Westerland sewage treatment plant on Sylt, two new digestion towers are taking shape as part of a modern digestion and sludge-dewatering facility.
Each prestressed concrete digester measures 11.7 metres in diameter and 15.6 metres high, with 22 prestressing tendons. The structures are being constructed progressively using a climbing method, with concrete placed by pump as the walls rise.

This approach allows repetitive vertical construction while maintaining controlled geometry and concrete quality across successive stages.

Happy Engineers Day: The Silent Force Behind Our Dreams

They say dreams are built in the sky, but it is the engineer who builds the ladder. Engineers don't just solve equations; they build bridges where there were only gaps, they create light where there was darkness, and they connect worlds that once felt light-years apart.

We salute the late nights, the endless calculations, and the silent determination that transforms impossible ideas into our daily reality. From the foundations beneath our feet to the connections that bring us closer, engineers are the invisible architects of our emotions.

To every engineer, thank you for not just building structures, but for engineering a brighter, safer, and more connected future for us all. Happy Engineers Day!

Shear Walls: The Backbone of Lateral Stability

In reinforced concrete buildings, shear walls are one of the most important structural elements for resisting lateral loads caused by wind and earthquakes.

While beams and columns primarily form the building’s gravity-load-resisting system, properly designed shear walls provide significant:

* 🎯 Lateral stiffness – controlling excessive horizontal movement and drift.

* 🎯 Lateral strength – resisting shear forces and overturning moments.

* 🎯 Structural stability – improving the overall performance of the building under wind and seismic actions.

* 🎯 Drift control – particularly important in high-rise structures.

🏗️ From a structural engineering perspective, the location, orientation, dimensions, reinforcement detailing, coupling beams, boundary elements, and connection with the floor diaphragms are all critical to the effective performance of a shear-wall system.

🧱 A shear wall is not simply a “thicker wall” — it is a key component of the building’s lateral-force-resisting system and must be properly considered from conceptual design through construction and inspection.

Good structural design is not only about strength; it is also about stiffness, stability, ductility, and constructability.

The iconic King Fahad Sports City Stadium is undergoing a massive transformation, proving that legendary sporting infrastructure can evolve to meet modern standards without losing its historic identity!

Originally opened in 1987, this national landmark is being expertly renewed through innovative sustainability and engineering strategies:

Capacity & Excavation: Expanding seating capacity by digging 10 meters down, repurposing excavated soil on-site to build a vibrant mixed-use landscape masterplan.

Circular Economy & Reuse: Repurposing old structural roof masts and cables into photovoltaic solar shade structures for parking areas, and giving the distinctive hexagonal cladding a second life on new utility buildings.

Heritage Preservation: Maintaining the beloved East Stand, royal hospitality areas, and the iconic Hive structure while introducing a state-of-the-art 36,000-square-metre cable-net roof canopy.

Advanced Comfort: Implementing semi-automatic deployable terrace covers that drop concrete surface temperatures by up to 8°C, paired with a smart displacement cooling strategy to combat the desert climate.

Community Integration: Adding a football academy, sports center, amphitheatre, fan zones, and relocating over 400 trees to establish a thriving green public parkland.

This project sets a brilliant benchmark for sustainable infrastructure development, honoring the past while engineering a high-performance future for global events.

Safety First: Mastering SABIC’s Life-Saving Rules (LSR) on Site

In high-stakes industrial plant ex*****on across Al Jubail, technical expertise must be paired with zero-compromise safety. SABIC Corporate’s Life-Saving Rules (LSR) are non-negotiable field protocols designed to prevent catastrophic incidents and safeguard every worker on site.

Understanding and strictly enforcing these rules ensures operational continuity, zero-accident milestones, and absolute compliance with international plant standards.

The 10 Core Life-Saving Rules Every Site Professional Must Follow

1️⃣ Work Authorization & PTW: Never start any activity without a valid, approved Permit to Work (PTW) and a clear Job Safety Analysis (JSA).

2️⃣Energy Isolation (LOTO): Verify complete zero-energy state and apply Lockout/Tagout before entering, servicing, or maintaining machinery or electrical systems.

3️⃣ Confined Space Entry: Test atmosphere, ensure continuous ventilation, verify standby personnel, and secure authorization before entering restricted spaces.

4️⃣ Working at Height: Utilize 100% tie-off with an inspected safety harness, certified anchorage points, and compliant scaffolding when working above 1.8 meters.

5️⃣ Line Breaking: Depressurize, drain, purge, and verify hazardous energy isolation before breaking any process line or vessel containment.

6️⃣ Lifting Operations: Never walk or stand under a suspended load. Ensure riggers are certified, cranes are inspected, and exclusion zones are barricaded.

7️⃣ Gas Testing: Conduct mandatory, continuous gas testing prior to and during hot works or entry into potentially hazardous atmospheres.

8️⃣ Excavation Safety: Secure proper pe*******on permits, inspect soil stability, and install required shoring or benching for excavations deeper than 1.2 meters.

9️⃣ Management of Change (MOC): Never modify plant equipment, procedures, or ex*****on plans without formal MOC review and authorized approval.

🔟 Driving Safety: Always wear seatbelts, adhere to plant speed limits, and eliminate mobile phone distractions while operating vehicles or heavy equipment.

Why LSR Adherence Matters for Field Engineers & QA/QC ❓

Strict compliance with SABIC LSR is not just a regulatory requirement—it reflects a strong safety culture on site. Prioritizing systematic safety inspections, verifying method statements, and maintaining zero tolerance for unsafe acts ensures structural integrity, protects human life, and maintains project timelines without costly stop-work orders.

Which rule do you think is the most favorite of yours?
Which LSR did we miss?
