Curiosidades sobre o rei da cozinha italiana: o tomate
O nome pomodoro (tomate) vem de uma palavra asteca, algo como TOMATL ou XITOMATL, e manteve-se praticamente o mesmo em quase todas as línguas. Só em Itália é chamado pomodoro, a maçã dourada, provavelmente porque os primeiros a chegar eram dessa cor. Na Polónia e até na Rússia, adotaram o nome italiano.
Não sei se sabia que o caule e as folhas do tomateiro são potencialmente tóxicos, embora para provocar intoxicação seja necessário comer pelo menos meio quilo. Durante muito tempo, foi utilizado como planta ornamental, uma planta que eu acho muito bonita.
Foram os espanhóis, que tiveram um contacto longo e próximo com os povos da América Latina, que se aperceberam que era comestível, difundindo o seu uso por toda a Europa.
Em Itália, os primeiros a utilizá-lo como condimento foram os napolitanos, que chamavam ao molho: molho de tomate à espanhola.
A notícia mais recente, infelizmente, não é uma curiosidade, mas um facto: se quiser bons tomates rosa locais, o preço pode chegar aos 5,20 euros por quilo.
