August 20, 1988 — The Iran-Iraq War Ceasefire 🇮🇷🇮🇶
On this day in 1988, a UN-brokered ceasefire officially ended the Iran-Iraq War, one of the bloodiest conflicts of the 20th century. The war had begun in September 1980 when Iraq invaded Iran and continued for almost eight years, leaving hundreds of thousands dead and causing enormous destruction. Both sides eventually accepted UN Security Council Resolution 598, and on August 20, 1988, the guns largely fell silent.
A war that lasted eight years ended without a clear victory— but at an enormous human cost.
