Bella was found fighting for her life in the River Trent.
On a Monday morning near Long Lane in Farndon, Nottinghamshire, a woman walking by the river noticed something moving in the water. When she looked closer, she realized it was a dog struggling to keep her head above the surface.
The dog, later identified by her microchip as Bella, was a Belgian Shepherd. She was not simply lost. She had been left in the river with a carrier bag containing a large rock tied to her lead.
Someone had allegedly tried to make sure she would not survive.
The woman managed to drag Bella out of the water and immediately contacted Nottinghamshire Police. Bella was taken to a local veterinarian, where she began receiving treatment. Police later said she was still quite poorly but showing encouraging signs, including eating soft food.
That small detail matters.
After being left in freezing water with a heavy rock tied to her, Bella was still trying. Still eating. Still holding on.
Nottinghamshire Police called the act “evil and nasty” and asked the public for help identifying anyone connected to the case. Officers also reminded people that Bella’s microchip name might not be the name she was known by to others.
By later the same day, police had arrested a 32-year-old man and a 31-year-old woman on suspicion of animal cruelty offenses. The RSPCA also became involved as inquiries continued.
Inspector Heather Sutton, Nottinghamshire Police’s neighborhood policing inspector for the Newark area, said the public response showed Britain’s love for animals, with many people offering support and information to help Bella and the investigation.
For Dog Nation, this is exactly why witnesses matter.
Bella could not call for help.
She could not explain who put her there.
She could only fight the water until someone noticed.
And thankfully, someone did.
A stranger stopped. A dog was pulled from the river. Police were called. A vet treated her. The public responded. And an animal cruelty investigation began.
Bella’s story is painful because of what was done to her.
But it is also powerful because she survived.
She was tied to weight and thrown away like her life meant nothing.

When we first found Espresso Martini, it was a life or death situation. We spent the first 24hrs wondering if she’d even make it. Our incredible medical team worked to find out what was causing her the severe problems and they quickly realised it’s likely a massive trauma.
We don’t know the full story but she’s now safe at Happy Doggo Land, receiving the best medical care and love from the team. ❤️
