The BYD Shark just took home a five-star safety rating from Euro NCAP, proving that the plug-in hybrid pickup can hold its own under Europe’s brutal crash-test standards. This top-tier score builds on earlier testing from Australia's ANCAP, but Euro NCAP pushed the truck even harder with its own frontal-offset and barrier impact simulations.
The Shark locked in an 82% score for adult protection, 86% for children, and an impressive 87% for its active safety tech. Crash testers were particularly happy with how well the cabin shielded six- and ten-year-old dummies during side collisions. It also gets bonus points for a built-in child presence detection system, a feature that is quickly becoming a must-have for family vehicles.
It wasn't a flawless run, though. During a side-impact test, one of the side-curtain airbags failed to deploy exactly as intended, resulting in a post-test penalty. BYD is already redesigning the airbag cover to fix the issue. Still, the truck's rugged DMO platform absorbed the brunt of the forces beautifully. Interestingly, Euro NCAP also gave BYD a nod for keeping physical buttons for core cabin functions. By bucking the trend of hiding everything inside digital screens, the Shark keeps the driver's eyes right where they belong: on the road.
