Balai Ma-yi continues the Java Jazz tradition which was started 14 years ago by art and food afficionados who recently decided to venture into eco-farming. It is the passion for art, culture and great food that linked the owners of Java Jazz to Balai Ma-yi enthusiasts.
“Ma-yi” is the Malay version of Ma-i which is how people from the place now known as the Philippines used be called by early traders from China. One of the territories covered by Ma-i is Mindoro where Balai Ma-yi owners come from. Our aim is to promote the culture, history and products of that province, especially from the artisanship of the Mangyans. Our family has had long meaningful connections with the tribe ever since we were children and until now when we continue to host them in our home and they also welcome us to their place.
Balai Ma-yi is not just a cafe. It is a “lifestyle” cafe where we welcome you to learn about the simple and peaceful lives that we can all enjoy.
