Founded on April 28, 1611, by Miguel de Benavides, O.P., the University of Santo Tomas (UST) in Manila is the oldest existing university in Asia and the largest Catholic university in the world in a single campus. Originally called Colegio de Nuestra Señora del Santisimo Rosario, it was established to prepare men for the priesthood.

On April 28, 1611, the University of Santo Tomas (UST) was established. Regarded as the oldest existing university in Asia*, it was initially known as the Colegio de Nuestra Señora del Santisimo Rosario. It would be elevated as a university by Pope Innocent X by 1645. Meanwhile, in 2015, UST became the first in the Philippines to be granted 4 stars by QS Top Universities. QS Stars awards universities with a rating of between 1 and 5 Stars, depending on their performance in eight specific criteria. A typical four star university is considered highly international, demonstrating excellence in both research and teaching.

*Note: Others regard Sungkyunkwan University in Korea as the oldest in Asia, being founded in 1398. There was a time, however, that Sungkyunkwan was closed to higher education, and it achieved modern university status only by 1895, coinciding with the Gabo (Kabo) Reform.
